Somerset drops back into their natural classification of 2A
They lose 19 Seniors from a team that went 27-2 (14-1 and 13-1) the last two years.
They leave a district where they only lost 1 game in four years and a region that they won the last two years.
A district schedule consisting of Wayne, Garrard, Taylor, Casey and Jackson Co. is UPGRADED to....
a district now consisting of Danville, Middlesboro and Lexington Christian.
Non-dist games with Lynn Camp, Russell Co, Estill Co, Danville (now Dist Game) and Southwestern...
may be replaced by (rumored) Hazard (1A finalist), E Jess (4A), W Jess (4A), Perry Central (5A), Whitley (5A) and Pulaski (5A) with a game to still be added (may be Russell Co)
Somerset returns LT Speaks and C Price on O-line, leading rusher Lange and leading WR Storm Wilson on O
On D the Jumpers return both DE's (Slaughter Brothers, yeah that's their real name) and 3 or 4 LB/DB's plus punter (ask Breathitt how big a weapon he was)
While this seems as if the Jumpers might be very young and inexperienced next year, no so fast my friend. This junior class is about as good as this past senior class was. This sophomore and freshman classes are the 4th and 5th very strong classes Somerset has had coming up from the middle school program in a row.
While this schedule is quite a bit tougher than what they played the last few years, those non-district games were set up by the previous coach.
I think Coach Lucas is demonstrating with next years schedule that he is willing to throw his boys into the fire each week to better prepare them for the end of the year.

Somerset has moved from a cupcake district to possible one of the toughest districts in the state OVERALL

Green Co played Somerset in JV ball this season and I remember in 2001/2002 season when Green Co. and Somerset was in the same district loved the rivalry with the Jumpers

will make them better prepared, dont worry about regular season, look at it at the end of the playoffs..

Definitely won't be able to say the Jumpers schedule is easy next season. As far as the playoffs go, it'll be very tough to make it out of the East side of the state but with what we have returning I think it is definitely possible. Do you have any idea as to where we will be playing those non-district games JD?

Those were my playing days and even though it was a 1A district, that district may have been the toughest in the state at the time. There was Danville, Somerset, and Green County. Harrodsburg and Campbellsville before their fall from grace, plus Metcalfe County who was a decent team at the time as well. Before Danville started dominating and everyone split, that district was a MONSTER.
I can't remember his name exactly perhaps someone could help me, but prior to the 2002 year that district had possible the four best RB's in the state in Kelvin Turner and Charles Pennix from Danville, Brandon Newell from Somerset, and the kid from Green County whose name I can't remember right now.

Yes I agree those where also my playing days as well I played for Green Co. both times we played somerset my Junoir and Senoir year. The kids name was Trell Mitchell, know him pretty well wasn't very big but had SPEED to burn. Also on Harrodsburg you had Mark Dunn and Patrick Bugg who both went on to play at EKU. Without a doubt that had to be one of the toughest districts in state from top to bottom. Both years Danville won but it was a battle getting in the playoffs I remember my junoir year it was a 3 way tie for second, were drew the lucky 4th place straw and had to go to Lville Holy Corss the #1 seed from the cross district and lost a tough game one a hailmary pass. I ALWAYS enjoyed those games with Somerset as you knew you were in for a battle.

No idea on where the games will be RSB.
I was talking with a guy that I ran into in Lexington today he said he thinks that Somerset and Breathitt may be playing week 4. If that is true then the Jumpers schedule is definately loaded next year.

Definitely, I realized I had forgotten Dunn and Bugg as soon as I entered it in, and I think I just quit chasing Mitchell about a week ago, haha. He was a very good high school back, as you know since he gutted us when we played. Definitely one of the toughest small school districts ever. Thanks for the memory,.
JD, I had heard that also about the Breathitt game but I have heard all of the teams you mentioned above as well. I've also heard LexCath at a bowl in Paris (trust me I didn't believe it either) and Green Co. though so I don't really know. No matter what our schedule is going to be in for an upgrade.

I forgot about the scrimmage against Lex Cath...that is a go I believe.
Coach is really toughening up the schedule next couple of years. But I think Somerset can be pretty dang good the next 2-3 years as we have a lot of really good young talent coming up.

They need to schedule PC and Southwestern Every Year.
12-12-2010, 11:03 PM
No it's not something that they need. Many would want it but I really don't think it would be as beneficial as some say. All of Somerset's best seasons came when they played either SW or PC. It is nice for the locals, but the Ray Correll Bowl is what Somerset needs.

Why? :ChairHit:
The arrangement now works well, schools (all three) get between $7,000 - $10,000 for particpating in the Correll Bowl each year.
Somerset has won last two games against county schools and lost the previous two games.
Some at SW and PC seem to be fixated on this.
Wow playing a local 2A school with around a third of thier enrollment would really prove a lot. On the surface PC and SW should every game with SHS and they don't, Somerset wins about half of the time against schools that should be able to beat them easily each and every year.

Exactly.

Based on reports of the Jumpers' new schedule and new district, the undefeated regular seasons likely are a thing of the past for Somerset.
Might be better for them in the long run, though. Just beat one metropolitan-area private school (LCA) to win district.
Then beat another metropolitan-area private (NewCath) to get to the finals.

Wow! :yikes: Don't think very highly of Danville's program, do we?

I don't think he meant anything towards Danville. He was just taking a thinly veiled swipe at Somerset--like he usually does.

Maybe, maybe not. Looking at the teams that are supposedly on our schedule next year, I feel like we still would have been undefeated if they were on our schedule this past season. Somerset handled E. Jessamine in a scrimmage early last year, they were better than PCC. Whitley Co, LCA and PC would have been tough but I still feel Somerset was better this past season. It is definitely going to be tougher than the last two seasons but I don't see how that rules out an undefeated season in '11.

Actually, my prior post was an intended slam at the KHSAA "brain trust" who chose to put 3 (and soon 4) very strong programs in one freakin' district.
And even more pointedly, it was a criticism of those same KHSAA "big thinkers" who consider the current public/private situation an even playing field. It ain't.
Don't be so paranoid.

Tough slate of games as glasgow will be a top 10 2A team as well this coming season.

The worst team on Somerset's schedule for 2011 is better than the best team they faced in their previous district.
That's a serious step up in competition from the past few years for the Jumpers, but they should be okay if they can get used to competing EVERY week.

So would Pulaski and Southwestern be willing to split the gate from those games with Somerset? If not, it makes no financial sense for Somerset to do it. If Somerset played one county school in the Correll Bowl each season and the other one on that team's home field then the Jumpers would receive 1/3 of the gate from the Correll Bowl and nothing from the other game while the county school would get that same 1/3 of the Correll Bowl and all of the gate from the Somerset game. As it stands right now all each county team has to do is drive across town, play and get a check for 1/3 of the gate. All of the prep (and there is a lot) is on Somerset. Besides, Somerset's field holds a lot more people and has a lot more parking than either of the 2 county schools.

I have to agree with you on that Norm Peterson
