After a 2-9 season in 09 newport finished the 2010 at .500. Is newport on the rise? THOUGHTS!

No. Newport is not rising. Unless 5-5 or so is rising. Newport really hasn't been consistently good since the early to mid 80's.

False Newport was one of the best 2a teams in the state from 96 to 2000 as well as 2003 to 2006.

How much do they return next year? If they have a Junior and Sophomore laden team, I would say yes they are on the rise. If they are mainly Seniors, then we'll have to wait and see how they do next year.

This team had 25 seniors so they will have to work hard next season.

Did they ever advance more than 2 or 3 games in the playoffs? With the decline of enrollment, we also have seen the decline in the football program.

They've been to the regional finals a few times.

I for one would love to see Newport be a state title contender in AA every year. I'd like even more if they took over the top spot in the city. What needs to happen is to have more kids playing in the Firefighter organization and beyond. I just don't know if there is enough kids playing to really elevate the program.

Yes, they were, but that was back when Newport was a bedroom community for Cincinnati with established neighborhoods and families. Kids stuck around and raised their own families after they left school. When I was a kid, everyone in town played some kind of ball, be it baseball, football or basketball. These days the city is little more than Mansion Hill surrounded by ever growing pockets of low income housing and the problems that go hand in hand with handouts. The City of Newport is concerned only with certain areas, namely Newport on the Levee, Mansion Hill and the new Kroger center. I doubt that they'll fall any lower than low 2A, but I don't see the city making any great strides in population growth in the future. Barring a one or two year wonder situation where they ride the back of a particularly talented player, I see Newport as a .500 team in their good years. Sorry to be such a pessimist, but the city has dug themselves a hole, and I don't see them doing much more than peering over the edge in the future.

nptb17 they didnt have 25 seniors they had around 14. And with this new coaching staff they have they will make there way to the top. I know these coaches and some of the players and its unbelievable how much these players buy into these coaches plan. These coaches have a never say die attitude.

They should tell NCC that the rent for the field it's doubling every year for the forseeable future.

What coaches don't when they come into a new job? That's naive. Newport is a tough place to build a program. There is a lot of things that makes it tough for the student athletes, coaches, parents and even faculty that makes it difficult to keep success. Bottom-line is that it is a stepping stone job. You could have posted the exact same thing when Schlarman came (but went). A lot of these things were said about Russell, despite his lack of experience for the Basketball job. And he bailed, even after one of Newports most successful basketball stints in years to go to his alma-mater. Unforunately, Newport climbing back to the top takes more than just "Coaches Plan". Good luck. I have a lot of friends of the program, but I've told them all the same thing as well.

Well, the Newport coach now is an alum. He might feel different and not want a different job for the same money. He might have Wildcat loyalty.

Well I grew up with their coach. He's not going anywhere unless they fire him and that won't happen anytime soon.

The problem is that the firefighters are not a feeder program to Newport as it once was. The major feeder program is the junior high school. The firefighters need to be more of a factor in getting their kids to want to attend Newport. Sadly a lot of kids that are great players in the firefighters don't produce when they do come to Newport.

I think that is the case for all of the teams now. The Senior is getting close to shutting down due to the small numbers. When a program like the Red Devils can't even get 20 players from the 7th & 8th grade ranks, then you can no longer call these feeder programs for anyone.

Newcath is lucky Newport even lets them use the field. Newport doesn't want blue and gold littering the area. Newports field is not Newcath's home. It's their rented space.

I thought at one time, Newport Stadium, football and baseball, was owned by the City and maintained by the City's recreation department. Isn't NewCath part of the City of Newport or is Ft. Thomas ready to adopt the hill on Carothers Road so they can brag they have 24 state football championships?

We don't want them in Ft. Thomas. They haven't won enough to make much difference. Newport Schools owns the stadium. They don't have to let NC use it and for what I hear NCC pays, they probably shouldn't.

iTS YOUR ATTITUDE THAT GIVES THE WORD "cake-EATER" REAL MEANING.:thanks:

My attitude is that I root against NCC because they won't play a close neighbor.
