He can here it from me too.
He's won 2 MVPs hasn't he.
How is he underrated?

I'm going with John Stockton.
He never got the credit he deserved IMO
He's 43rd on the top 50 players all-time yet he's #1 in assists and steals with insurmountable leads in both categories.

John is also underrated BUT he has the same problem that Scottie Pippen does, he played behind someone more well known that was just as good, if not better.

I know we will argue about that but the Mail Man is legendary. Just as Jordan was for Scottie.

You MIGHT be able to argue that Robinson was the leader of one or two of those titles. The second title Timmy was the MVP of the NBA, so he had to lead it. Without a doubt, Timmy lead 3 championship teams.

John was great and one of my favorites, but Timmy is probably one of the top 10-15 players in history, and he hardly gets talked about.

Think about it. Ask someone to name the 10 best players in the NBA. They probably say:
Kobe
Wade
Melo
LBJ
Durant
Dirk
Gasol
Paul
Howard
Nash
Pierce/Garnett/Rondo/Allen (they will say one of those)

Notice that Timmy is not on that list? Now ask for a list from the 90's:
Jordan
Pippen
Hakeem
Miller
Stockton
Malone
Ewing
Drexler
etc....

Notice people will say Stockton.

I will not be one of those people that blames Stockton or Malone for never having a championship but Timmy has to have some love for having 4 titles.

My only argument with what your saying is the part about Malone being better.
I simply think Malone took the spotlight because he was scoring the points and Stock was getting the dimes.
If you put Karl Malone on any other team in the NBA....
he's not the #2 scorer All-Time.
He would be up there, but Stockton was responsible for A LOT of Karl's points.

I agree with LWC, Duncan may be one of the most underrated players in all sports.

I agree that he set him up and they made each other great. Who had heard much about EITHER of them before they went to the Jazz? One went to Gonzaga and the other to Louisiana no-name, they got together and magic happened.

The point I was really trying to make is that they had each other, Duncan had no NBA Top-50 talent outside of an gettin-old Robinson for 2 of the 4 titles.

Jeff Fisher won 2 National Titles 78 and 80 with the USC Trojans. Fisher was on the 1985 Superbowl team with the Bears.

Joker won a bowl game in 1984 as a player so there is one ring, and he has got 3 rings for coaching @ UK in those 3 bowls (Music City, Music City, and Liberty Bowl) from -06,07,08 well there is for 4.

I wont even mention Cal, He'll have a couple before it is all said and done, since he is at the best Basketball program in the country.Big Grin

That is a total of 7 just with that, now you help me with Stockon? Wink

But isn't that the whole problem here? We only appreciate guys if they won a title. John Elway was on his way to becoming the greatest disrespected player in the history of the NFL, until the very end of his career when he won 2 Super Bowls. Karl Malone, 2nd all-time NBA scorer in basketball, but people never respected him because he never won a title until it was sitting on the Lakers bench. We only associate success with titles, and that is completely unfair when judging how truly fantastic an athlete was. The only thing that detractors of Lebron can hang their argument on is he has not won a title. Does that not arguably not make him 1a or 1b in the argument of who is the best NBA player in the league? With title goes the respect. This thread is perfect for calling out the guys who deserve respect but never got it due to something like not winning a title. Scottie Pippin is considered one of the NBA's greatest 50 to ever play. C'mon, without Jordan and those 6 titles, Pippin would have been a nobody. People view Pippin as a greate NBA player than Drexler - only because Pippin got the rings!

I'll go back quite a few years here, and say Dan Issel, if you counted both the ABA and NBA stats, the former UK great scored 27,482 points which would place him sixth on the all time scoring list. Issel also had 11,133 rebounds, not bad for a 6-9 center.

I never saw him in his prime. Everything that I read about him was his intensity was not matched. I saw him at the tailend of his career with Denver I believe. I know he went on to coach the Nuggets.

Richmond was also a 6-time all-star and won the '89 rookie of the year award.

Curtis Martin. He rushed for 1000+ yards in 10 out 11 seasons, rushed for 14,101 for his career. Similar to Larkin you never heard about him in the media. He just went out did his job.

The main goal in sports is to win. Would MJ be considered the greatest player of all time if he didn't win 6 championships and wasn't named MVP in all of them? I believe not.
Some say Bill Russel is the greatest center ever, would he be considered that without all of his rings? No.
Winning these past two championships has made Kobe the face of the league and he still has the #1 selling jersey worldwide.
For instance, in China Kobe is basically worshiped because in that country, for athletes, they hold winners in the highest regard. Can't find the article but I wouldn't lie to ya Big Grin
