I have had several questions in recent weeks about the state of Kentucky's Class of 2012 crop of girls' prospects. And when asking about it the coach always says, 'it's not that great.'
Unfortunately, that might be true.
It's not the best class the state has ever produced but there are still a few solid players. I would say the class lacks depth like some of the more recent years and is just in a bad position of having a class behind it - 2013 - that is loaded with Division I talent.
Still, there are some good players to pick from and I am taking - at this point - Boone County's Sydney Moss (right) as the state's top player. She really showed me something at the state tournament and backed that with a sensational spring and summer. She's the daughter of NFL All-Pro wide receiver Randy Moss.
Manual point guard April Wilson, who has committed to Purdue, is No. 2 on my list of top players.
Here's my top-20 players statewide for this class:
1. Sydney Moss, Boone County - She has the total package: good size and speed, solid skill-set and a motor that just keeps going.
2. April Wilson, Manual - She knows how to run a team from the point spot.
3. Jenna Crittendon, Ryle - Maybe the sleeper of the group. She's versatile and big-time.
4. Bre Elder, Marion County - Everybody talks about the two standout sophomores but Elder is as solid as they come for the Lady Knights.
5. Kendall Noble, Perry County Central - She has switched schools - from Breathitt County - and you should see a change in her game.
6. Megan Pittman, Casey County
7. Ashli Mayes, Franklin County
8. Micah Jones, Green County
9. Kara Wright, Manual
10. Lindsey Burd, Hart County
11. Peyton Hisel, Tates Creek
12. Rianna Gayheart, Owen County
13. Miranda Davenport, Harlan County
14. Peyton Wright, Owsley County
15. Ashley Cheesman, Ryle
16. Adalaide Luckett, Elizabethtown
17. Haley Armstrong, Murray
18. Lauren Bodine, Manual
19. Ashley Mullins, Harlan
20. Kelsey Carmack, Deming
OTHER NAMES TO REMEMBER
Sydney Brown, Anderson County; Caylan Bybee, Monroe County; Jamie Cummings, Barren County; Kim Fulcher, Graves County; Molly Lamb, Greenwood; Sarah Martin, Daviess County; Candace Morton, Henry Clay; Haley Perkins, Glasgow; Christy Soldo, Hopkinsville; Martessia Williams, Christian County; Kelsea Wilson, Grayson County; Ashley Woolum, North Laurel.
