Where Should The State Championships Be Played?
#1
Where do you think the state finals should be played?

Is the Pizza Box the right place?
Should there be a game at Commonwealth?
Should each game be at a different location?
Should it rotate between North, South, East, West?
Should an honest effort be made to locate the games in a central location that is closer for both teams (to draw more fan interest?)

What do you think?

I am sure that there are ways to improve this system . . . .

Well IMO.....Don't get me wrong I like the Red/White on the field and the Red seats in PJCS but, I think that Commonwealth Stadium would be a great place tp play the State Championships. It's the most Centralized location in the state and would be no more than a 3 hour trip for anyone to play there.

Except Mayfield maybe (probably closer to 5 or even 6 hours). But I like your points.

At the very least--it is something that should be looked at.

Well, I see the point of Mayfield, but how much time has it been since a team from that far west been to the Title Game ?

I would venture to say atleast 98 % of the teams that have played for a State Championship has came from east of I-65...

You have a definite point, my friend. Mayfield makes frequent appearances. And there involvement alone shouldn't constitute a change. But this season--you also have Bowling Green (close to 3-4 hours from Louisville/Lexington), Owensboro Catholic would also be a haul from Lexington, we also could have had Warren Central.

What would you think about waiting to see who plays, then announce the site (which would be as close as possible for both schools) on Sunday? The only issue with that is--if you are not a fan of either of those schools--and just go to see the game because you are a football fan--you could never see all of the games. But it could actually draw significantly more fans over all. (Because it is closer).

I like the idea of Commonwealth, but Papa Johns Cardinal Stadium is an excellent site. But, a rotation of the two would be cool for teams that go back-to-back like Belfry, St. X, and Trinity.
#7
i think Papa Johns is good enough, not all teams that make it to the finals have turf, or have even played on it for that matter... so i think its good that they get a chance to do so at least once
#8
I think it should rotate between Papa Johns and Commonwealth
#9
I would like to see the 1 and 2 at EKU and WKU every other year. and 3 and 4 at Pappa Johns. Commomwealth Staduim would be nice, but I think they would charge too much for it being used.

I agree Louisville is a good center point of the state. But I do think that the semi-final games and maybe even the regional championship games should be played on a neutral site. Take a site that is relatively the same distance between both schools. I'm thought about using the college fields for the state semi-final games. For instance this year, this is what I came up with for state semi-final games:

Kentucky or Georgetown

NCC-1 hour, 30 minutes
Somerset 1 hour 45 minutes
Somerset-NCC-2 hours
Western Kentucky-Bowling Green
Mayfield-2 hours 30 minutes
Bardstown-1 hour 40 minutes
Bardstown-Mayfield-3 hours 20 minutes
Morehead
Belfry-2 hours
Russell-1 hour 30 minutes
Russell-Belfry-2 hours
Eastern KY-Richmond
Rockcastle-32 minutes
Lex Cath.-35 minutes
Rockcastle-Lexington-1 hour
Campbellsville
Owensboro Cath-2 hours 30 minutes
DeSales-2 hours
DeSales-Owensboro Cath-2 hours
Kentucky Wesleyan-Owensboro
Bullitt East-2 hours 15 minutes
Bowling Green-1 hour 15 minutes
Bullitt East-Bowling Green-2 hours
Kentucky State-Frankfort
Trinity-1 hour
Henry Clay-40 minutes
Trinity-Henry Clay-1 hour 20 minutes

I still yet to come up with a neutral site for the St. X-Warren Central, they both have big stadiums in their towns. I guess since Western's was already being used they could just play at PJS.

Here are the distances teams will have to travel to play at PJS this year.
Papa John’s Stadium

Newport-1 hour 45 minutes

Mayfield-3 hours 40 minutes

Russell-3 hours 20 minutes

Owensboro-2 hours

Lexington Cath-1 hour 30 minutes

Bowling Green-2 hours

I can see why Russell could make a case for moving the 2A game to Lexington. Russell's time to Commonwealth would be 2 hours and 15 minutes and Owensboro Cath's would be 3 hours. I can also see where Mayfield would want the game moved to Western it would change travel times to NCC's 3 hours and 30 minutes and Mayfield's 2 hours and 40 minutes. With Eastern KY teams making frequent visits to the 2A finals maybe it should be played at Commonwealth and 1A game rotate between Commonwealth and Western. I don't see much reason in moving the 3A or 4A game. So I could agree with LC99's view with the 1A and 2A game rotating between Commonwealth and Western.

I like the way it is... I love the Pizza Box I think it is a great place to have the state finals played it is IMO the prerfect size stadium for one of these games and it is decently close to most of the teams that venture to state on a regualr basis.

commonwealth stadium
#13
Well for example, in 2003 Belfry played Elizabethtown for the State Championship. Belfry was on the road about four and a half hours to get there.....Elizabethtown 45mins. to an hour, thats not centralized.
#14
i think the commonwealth would be good because its the university of KENTUCKY not louisville and we all live in kentucky, this may not make any sense but its what i have always thought lol
#15
i think it should be held at commonwealth stadium
#16
No way should the championship games be held at Commonwealth. 4 games over 2 days in December on Bermuda in bad weather is a bad idea. The field couldn't handle it.

Papa Johns is the ideal place. Louisville is actually more centrally located than Lexington. Better accomodations. Field Turf is the ideal surface for an event like this, hands down.

I wouldn't change a thing except going back to the 2/2 format.
#17
they couldnt play at Commonwealth the cats get beat there every week its just bad mojo
#18
You have to think about the grass...
#19
I say poppa john becuase the feelings of sayin you played on the louisville football field is such a great feeling.
#20
imo i like the rotation idea
#21
commonwealth
#22
I think that they should let 2 games be played at the Commonwelth and then 2 games play at Papa Johns. Most kids will never ever get to play or go to them places.
#23
i think ot should be played at papa johns
