Bell County/Clay County Scrimmage Results
#1
Bell Co 30
Clay 17

Bell Co was Bell Co. Some young boys showed how good they will be this year. Polly, Collett, and Oslonian
#2
How did JV Hooker look for Clay?
#3
The 'other' site says the two varsity teams tied, 14-14.

Yes it was tied. But like always people get real excited about that. Bell Co never wins by alot or sometimes gets beat in these gridorama's. Thats just what Dudley has done in years.

Harlan Co and Knox Central both were there and Bell Co plays both this year and DH said he wasnt showing nothing even if it was a "L".
#5
First 5-10 min in the game Cory Davenport didnt even touch the ball at first. Mills and Hilton did the carries.
#6
was there and both teams were very impressive
clay co is for real and so is bell co
both teams have alot of athletes
knox central did not impress me at all the canady kid is very good
and the gilliam kid but thats about it
#7
Bell did not show much but also I was not too impressed with them. Did not have a lot of speed and did not play very hard.

Clay seems to have improved and has some good size. Hooker had 1 long TD catch and showed his speed but he beat what to appeared to be a young DB for Bell.

Knox Central in the other scrimage was very impressive. Good size and played very very hard. They maybe the favorite just from what I saw tonight.

Even with limited "show" Bell's offense is a machine. Madon is excellent on the run and the O-line for Bell is fantastic.

Clay marched the ball down the field on Bell easier than any local team I have ever seen. And scrimmage or not - nobody lets up on D and Bell wasnt either. But I don't know if that was a "chink in the armor" for Bell or just a preview of Clays high power offense this year. Clay's O-line is excellent, especially their right tackle #61. Bell's DT was simply undersized and no match for him. Bell's secondary was tough except for when Hooker burned them for a long TD bomb that likely many teams will feel all year long.

Overall - two great teams that will be tough to beat all year long. Both offenses will score at will against most any team they play.

Oslonian Backup QB who had that pick six for about 90 yards, Collett RB who busted through for a 60 or 70 yard TD, and Davenport have SPEED. Its the same team as last year minus Lowe and Raines as skilled positions on offense. Everyone else graduated, played on the line or hardly even played. The team you saw tonight is 90% of the same team in 09.

Like I said this is the way Bell Co ALWAYS plays in these type of scrimmages. I hope alot of people think we arent as good as last year. :eyeroll:

I can promise if this was a REAL game Bell Co wins 42-7.

Caught a long bomb TD and had a very nice interception. Great play from a great player.

I agree Bell is a great team and will have a great season. But the plays you point out here are not relevant. They happened against JV for the most part. The varsity vs varsity match was dead even. Bell - with its 1st team D in the game - could simply not stop Clays running or passing game. The losses from Bell's team last year were obvious on the DLine. Billy was a beast last year and clearly was not replaced.

Still, Clay could not stop Bell either - but to assert that Bell could have blow Clay away is to miss the point. Bell likely could have scored 40 on Clay. But Clay may well have scored 40 on Bell. Bell would win in a high scoring match though with the far better kicker...

Not going to start a argument over this. My point is this is a SCRIMMAGE and if you guys followed Bell Co and have been to every Gridorama they have played in this is how Dudley plays. Even in the 08 and 09's. IF everyone wants to base Bell Co off this one scrimmage so be it. The real season starts next week.

I heard that both teams kept it pretty simple, someone said clay only used two offensive formations and stayed in one defensive front.

Sorry guys but the correct score was 36-17 Bell Co. That last score was at the end of the game with no extra point attempt. This from the Middlesboro Daily News about the game.

BARBOURVILLE — Bell County coach Dudley Hilton was pleased with what his Bobcats got out of their SEKC scrimmage against Clay County Friday.

The Tigers provided a tough test in the first half, playing Bell to a 14-all tie. With more back-ups taking the field in the second 20-minute half, the Bobcats used several big plays to break the scrimmage open.

“We needed a good, strong game. That’s a good way to start things out,” Hilton said. “Going up against a good team is just what we needed and we got out of it injury free.”

While Clay was able to keep from giving up many big plays to the Bell starters, they weren’t able to get the Bobcat offense off the field much in the first half.

Bell ran 35 plays to the Tigers’ 16 and put together two long, time-consuming scoring drives.

With seniors Taylor Mills and John Dudley Hilton splitting carries with junior Cory Davenport the Bobcats marched 82 yards for the first score of the scrimmage.

Davenport was ruled down at the half-yard line after a six-yard burst up the middle and senior quarterback Ben Madon scored on a sneak to cap it and Hilton added the extra point for a 7-0 lead.

Senior defensive back Bryan Thacker started the drive with an interception deep in Bell territory. That turned back a Clay scoring chance after they recovered an errant lateral on the first play of the scrimmage.

Clay was able to move the ball on their second drive and answered Bell’s TD when John V. Hooker got behind Thacker for a 33-yard touchdown pass from John Wilson to tie things at 7.

Bell answered with a 70-yard drive. Cody Davenport had a couple of catches for first downs and Cory Davenport finished it off with a one-yard TD run.

Davenport gained 96 yards on 13 carries in the scrimmage as the Bobcats piled up 278 rushing yards as a team.

Madon completed 5-of-11 passes for 68 yards.

Overall, Bell out-gained Clay 366-138.

“Offensively we looked good at times and we were able to run a lot of plays,” Hilton said. “Clay County has a got a strong quarterback and they were able to make some plays.”

In the second half sophomore Ryan Collett broke loose for a 70-yard touchdown run and also ran in the two-point conversion.

Jonathan Polly caught a 20-yard touchdown pass from Corey Oslonian and Oslonian finished the scoring with a 95-yard interception return for a touchdown.

“I think the heat was a hard thing to deal with for both teams,” Hilton said. “I don’t know if we are in as good of condition as we thought we were. But this was a good way to get ready for the season.”

Bell County opens up next Friday in the City/County Bowl at Middlesboro where they’ll play Green County at around 8:30 p.m.

These games means nothing it will never show up as a win for any of the teams
that played this weekend next week is when it all counts .
#23
Davenport only carried the ball 13 times for a average of 7.3 ypc.

Some of you guys are drinking too much of the Bell koolaid. Both teams kept the offense simple, It was 14 - 14 when the starters went out. Bells younger palyers got the best of Clay's younger players. Dudley said what he wants in the paper, but in hearing of the Bell coaches talk after the game , they definitely were not happy. Clay only ran 16 plays as Bell was giving up the big play for scores. Bell ran more plays as they were getting 3 to 4 yards at a time. Nothing wrong with long sustained drives but Clay did not need them against the Bell defense. Both teams looked good, but I have to think Clay is happier with the performance as not nearly as much expected from them.
Bell expected to come out an demolish Clay but they simply came out even when the starters were playing.

I will say this for the 100th time. IF this was a real game it wouldnt had even been close. This is typical Bell Co in a scrimmage. DAVENPORT 13 carries usually avg 30 a game. Davenport didnt even touch the ball at the beginning of the game, Bell's 2 fullbacks did. Not to mention Bell's return team is SICK would had got to the 40+ every single time making a shorter field.
#26
just one thing football1 nobody would beat clay 42-7 this year
they will score 28-35 points on anybody
bell is the best they will see all year and if they play it would be very close
#27
Bell played at 3/4 speed last night as always in a grid. Worked on fundamentals. Some weaknesses were observed last night and that's what the intentions were for the coaches. What's to argue about. It's a grid. Crazy plays are run, fundamentals are watched and everybody gets to see the new uniforms. That's all a grid is about. Why argue.

Man this is confusing so many different scores. I do think that this may be the best team Clay Co has field since the Henson kid was their back in the Early 90's.

Agreed. Who did they lose to then? Bell twice in 1 season.

Bell did not look good at all but they typically don't in the grid anyway. I hope they continue to look this defeat able down the road but I doubt they will. They have some weapons on offense but the defense looked very very suspect.

Bell Co's defense returns S Madon, DB Davenport, DB Thacker, DE Mills, DL Patterson, LB Hilton, and LB Brown. All which started last season at their positions.

We lost starters in DB Raines, DE Lowe, DL Marcum, and DL Lawson.
