Don't have much details only that he was 75 y.o. and a member of the West Van Lear FD. He was on the scene of a structure fire and became pinned by a piece of apparatus.
Prayers go out to the family and the department.

The Last Alarm
My father was a fireman, he drove a big red truck
And when he'd go to work each day he'd say "Mother, wish me luck"
Then dad would not come home again until sometime the next day
But the thing that bothered me the most was the things some folks would say
A fireman's life is easy, he eats and sleeps and plays,
and sometimes he won't fight a fire for many, many days
When I first heard these words I was young to understand
But I knew when people had trouble Dad was there to lend a hand
Then my father went to work one day and kissed us all goodbye
but little did we realize that night we all would cry
My father lost his life that night when the floor gave way below
And I wondered why he'd risked his life for somone he did not know
But now I truly realize the greatest gift a man can give
is to lay his life upon the line so that someone else might live
so as we go from day to day and pray to God above
Say a prayer for your local fireman
He may save the ones you love

When I am called to duty, God
Whenever flames may rage,
Give me the strength to save some life
Whatever be its age,
Help me embrace a little child
Before it is too late
Or save an older person from
The horror of that fate
Enable me to be alert and
Hear the weakest shout
And quickly and efficiently
To put the fire out
I want to fill my calling and
To give the best in me,
To guard my every neighbor and
Protect his property
And if according to my fate
I am to lose my life,
Please bless with your
protecting hand
My children and my wife.

Police say McKenzie was taking water to the scene of a structure fire in West Van Lear in Johnson County.
After he arrived and got out of the truck, police say the truck rolled forward over an embankment and struck the 75-year-old volunteer firefighter.
Johnson County coroner J.R. Frisby pronounced McKenzie dead at the scene.

Man i hate it when someone dies, but when you've been involved in the emergency services as long as i have, it just hits deep. I think catdawg can say its just a little different.

Just to give you a little info his name should be placed on the National FF Memorial in Emittsburgy, MD. They have the cermony on the Sunday before National Fire Prevention week each year. If your family gets the chance to attend its really nice.
11-26-2005, 12:29 AM
I think that should have been Emmitsburg. I'll have to check its been awhile.
11-26-2005, 12:37 AM
