Katelyn Miller was outstanding in both games allowing only 3 singles in 2 games. Fairview had 2 8th grader Carissa Smith & 7th grader Madison Humphrey in Ashlands 12-2 Win & Boyd's Kaitlin Brown had the other in Ashlands 9-0 Championship game. She had 13 strikeouts in the championship game and showed why she was the MVP along with collecting a couple of hits herself. Good luck Ashland & Boyd in the regionals next week.

Ashland pitcher MVP after dominant performance against Boyd County

CANNONSBURG — When the stakes get higher, Ashland pitcher Katelyn Miller takes her game to a completely different level.
Miller, who was named tournament most valuable player, turned in a dominant performance striking out 13 while just giving up one hit in the Kittens 9-0 victory over Boyd County in the 64th District Championship game. Giving Ashland four consecutive District titles.
“Katelyn pitched extremely well tonight,” said Ashland coach Dave Miller. “She was hitting her spots well, and when she does that she is almost untouchable.”
Miller’s performance also drew high praise from Boyd County coach Geoff Stewart.
“She pitched an outstanding game. The way she pitched tonight, they were going to beat anyone in the region,” he said. “If she continues to pitch like that then Russell and them have to be the favorites in the region.”
The Kittens bats came out red hot in top of the first inning, where they raced out to an early 4-0 advantage.
Eighth-grader McKenzie Vanover drove in the first two runs of the game with a double down the right-field line. Vanover would later come around to score on a fielders choice. Breanna Ray’s single to right would plate Jordan hensley for the final run of the frame.
The Ashland (26-11) offense wasn’t done yet, they would add a pair of runs in the second inning.
Katie Caron started the inning with a double to left, Miller followed with a walk, and Kelsee Hammond’s single loaded the bases with nobody out. After two ground balls led to force outs at home, Emily Preece laced a single into right field that scored two.
“That was a big, big hit for us,” Miller said. “It looked like them might get out of the inning, then (Preece) came up with that hit.”
After that single by Preece, Boyd County pitcher Caitlin Coburn really settled down and recorded the next 12 batters she faced.
“She didn’t have her best stuff at the beginning and they hit her pretty good,” Stewart said. “But she really calmed down and started hitting her spots.”
The Kittens would tack on three insurance runs in the top of the seventh, this time aided by several Boyd County mistakes.
After back-to-back singles started the inning and a groundout to the pitcher that advanced both runners, the Lady Lions booted a grouder allowing both runners to score. The final run of the game came on a bad throw to third, allowing the runner to score.
In all the Lady Lions tallied four errors.
“We just made too may errors tonight to beat anybody, let alone a really good team,” Stewart said.
Kaitlin Brown recorded the only hit for the Lady Lions, a single to left-field in the third inning.
Katie Caron was 2-for-3 with a double to lead the Kittens.
Both teams advance on to the 16th Region Tournament, which begins Monday at Greenup County High School.

Ashland will win the regional final by beating Boyd by atleast 3 runs. Boyd is much younger than Ashland and it will show on the big stage. Congrats to both teams for making to the finals. Both schools have outstanding programs and coaches.
