Don't be surprised if Corbin doesn't win the 50th district again. Tony is by far the best coach in the region. He gets more out if less than anyone. If not Corbin, I will have to pick Williamsburg. They should have a nice team. If Williamsburg wins the district they will also make noise in the region plus it will be at the arena and they'll bring a large crowd. Clay should win the region though.

Can anyone compete with with Clay?

I don't see why not. The region hasn't had a dominant team that was head and shoulders above the rest. That won't change this year. Clay will have a very good team but so will several other teams.
11-08-2013, 11:39 AM
Clay will be as close to dominant as it gets this year. Knox Central has a good team, but can't ever seem to get it done in the tourney. Other than that, I see no one that can challenge Clay.
11-08-2013, 03:09 PM
Did Knox Central, Bell County and Jackson County not challenge Clay last year? I think Knox actually won and Bell played within two or three, and Jackson played them close a couple of times.
They all bring back basically the same teams and Clay lost four starters.
I'm not even sure Clay has the best team, but McDaniel is very good and I'll take Bubba's and UKCC's words that the other guys have improved enough to keep them No. 1. I still don't see a blowout though.

No blowouts, just the best team.

this could be a competitive year.there are 4 or 5 teams that could be rated tops and probably 3 sleepers.should be fun.

Does anybody know when any of the top 13th region teams scrimmage? I cant wait to see them play!

By the end of the year there will be a couple teams capable of beating Clay but I am sticking with Clay to win the region again
11-12-2013, 09:55 AM
I don't get the idea that a couple of teams are going to catch up with Clay during the course of the year.
Bell brings back five starters from a team that played Clay down to the wire. Knox also brings back most of its lineup from a team that beat Clay.
Clay is starting three sophomores, I think, who have not been varsity starters before. Clay should actually be the team with more room to improve. Their lineup is entirely new except for McDaniel.
I would guess that Bell and Knox start out the season ahead of Clay.

Great points. That makes a lot of sense.

I agree T best coach in district and 1 of the top in region but as district champ last 2 years he lost in 1st round of region to runner ups Pineville and Mboro. Mboro they had beaten by 17 earlier in year and Pville by 14 earlier in year.

I wish i was his dad, I would be able to retire in a few years when he is making millions playing golf!
McDaniels is the best player in region and NO ONE can stop him. Clay will win the region, unless coach gets in the way.

The region winner has always had a good or great point guard. Clay has the best!

Clay scrimmages Letcher Central saturday 5:30 @ Letcher.........I will let you everyone know how it turns out.......but I'm sure some of you guys on here will be at the game!
11-17-2013, 01:53 AM
Redstorm...Fox is the best point guard in the region. McDaniels is a shooting guard that has to play point at times because Clay doesn't have anyone else.

Anyone heard about any scrimmages so far with 13th region teams?

Knox drubbed Harlan last night. I've been saying all along that Harlan is lower half of the region, in terms of rating. The score, with their regulars in the first half was 58-21. Knox led 36-11 at the end of the first quarter. Again, 58-21 at halftime. The second half, Knox Central played their bench, while Harlan's 1st team remained in the game. Final score was something like 87-62. Knox Central is the real deal. I think they give Clay a run for the regional title. I like Jackson Co., Bell Co., and Harlan Co. as contenders as well. Back to Harlan. The Miller kid made a mistake transferring to Harlan Ind. He looked lost at times last night, with not much support around him. Again, Harlan will be a 9-12 win team and finish 4th in their district.

I heard hear in Arjay that Middlesboro has a bunch of football kids out. Several who didn't play before.
11-24-2013, 04:55 PM
I think Tyler Prater is the only one back who didn't play last year, but he will help. He sat out last year and was a pretty good post player as a sophomore.

Corbin will be young but will have younger talent that will surprise many.
8th graders: Andrew Taylor & Bayley Rice
9th graders: Tanner Barnes, A.J. Moore, & Samuel Taylor
And...
Never count Coach Pietrowski out. He is smart, knows how to utilize talent to get the win.

You're very misguided on this topic, I assure you. Unless you were in attendance for the game, like myself, the score, 85-62, will be extremely misleading. Knox, well deserving of their 2nd ranking, was impressive, but not head and shoulders better than the dragons. Harlan, ran a triangle and two defense, one offensive play, one offensive out of bounds play, and did not press, trap, or run ANY of their normal sets. This all because NL, the Green Dragons first regular season opponent, was in attendance scouting. You're sadly mistaken if you believe, even for a moment, that the Dragons are going to be an under-achieving "9-12 win team, and finish 4th in their district."
11-26-2013, 09:37 AM
You are right. Harlan should win 15-20 games. Who do they play. To have such high expectations the schedule is disappointing. Red Bird, OBI, Thomas Walker, can't remember some of the others, but is so watered down!!!
11-26-2013, 10:57 AM
WOW!!! You must be the biggest harlan homer around. I was in attendance, and only reporting what I saw. I don't care if you're running different sets, changeing defenses, not showing everything or running the picket fence every time down the court. You were down FORTY...yes FORTY at half time. Any sane individual would be able to see that Knox Central was vastly more talented than Harlan. And yes, Knox Central is "head and shoulders better than the dragons". Are you kidding me?? You were down FORTY in the matter of two quarters. I might have miscalculated the projected win total for Harlan. Didn't pay attention to their schedule that closely. With the likes of Red Bird, OBI, Thomas Walker, June Buchanan, J Frank White Acad, etc. etc., they will win more than 9-12 games. However, they are still 4th in their district and will not make it to the regional tourney. As for as the Class A. Forget about it!!! Jackson Co., Barbourville, Middlesboro, Pineville, Williamsburg are all better. You're a little dillusional Harlan Native!!!!!
11-26-2013, 11:01 AM
Oh yeah, I will agree with harlan Native on one thing. 85-62 was misleading. Had Knox Central continued to play their starters in the second half, the score would have been much uglier. So, I agree 23 point margin of victroy doesn't seem so bad when it could've easily been 55.

It looks like Coach P is building for the future. Is the Maguet kid who is a freshman also dressing varsity? If so, that will give Corbin 6 players on the varsity who are either 8th or 9th grade.
Did the Garrison kid whose family moved to Corbin enroll back at Knox Central?

How did Corbin do last night in the Panaroma?

Harlan will be better and should win several games, but they will also get help from their schedule. I have seen several 13th region teams schedules and the Harlan Green Dragons schedule is pretty weak overall. I do agree, that Knox Central will be a top 3 team all year in the 13th.

Andrew Taylor and Bayley Rice will get plenty of minutes. Browning and Maguet will get some time as well. Barnes, Moore, and S. Taylor will not get much time until Soph or Junior year. This year's team has five seniors but none are outstanding. They play really hard together and are unselfish. I see Goins, Shelton, Waddle, A Taylor and possibly Browning as the first five but look for a
lot of subbing. Rice, Hopper, Henson, and Maguet will be needed.
