-__- just wrote the longest run on sentence in the history of BGR. You do have an argument with the 5 for 5, although I still think Clay's 5 is better. And Clay's 7-8 definitely. Jackson doesn't have two big things that Clay does. A 6'8 force in Allen and McDaniel. McDaniel has been ice ever since his freshman year. Jackson has some good talent but they have nobody who can take the game into their own hands like he does. I expect Allen to have a huge year and he may end up being the biggest "surprise" so to speak, especially after his disappointing year last year at NL.

I don't know if anyone in the region has more than two proven varsity players. If you're just talking about just five players, I'd probably go with Knox Central. They have a great point guard, a very good center and two good shooters. Clay will get the nod overall because McDaniel was so good in the clutch last year, but they have question marks. Knox, Bell and Jackson have a more experienced starting five.
When you get to seven or eight deep and beyond I think you go to teams like South Laurel and Harlan County, who have been really strong on the JV level.

I can't decide who is the better competition to Clay, Jackson or Knox; leaning Jackson. I somewhat agree with the Bell comment but after that anyone talking about another team is wasting their time. That may sound harsh but come on. I'm tired of hearing about JV teams that have never produced in varsity like "they should". Clay's JV team wasn't much of anything and they could be looking at back-to-back region titles. It means nothing when the best players are sophomores only playing varsity. Fox and company with the addition of Collier will win a lot of ball games and it wouldn't shocked me if they traded victories home and away with the Tigers. They have Knox at home so that should be interesting. Potter will lead Bell and they'll be right there. If Mlller stays at HC, they're maybe in the discussion. Wolfe and Smith are improved for Clay and "rumor" has it, House and Farmer are right there for starting jobs. Don't think these guys are slouches because you've never heard or seen them play. The season is almost upon us. Won't be long before these predictions we all have will be answered in someway.

Clay always used to have junior-sophomore JV teams, beat everybody, then win the region with new guys the next year in varsity after everyone graduated.
10-30-2013, 12:33 AM
Not recently. For example McDaniel never stepped on the floor of a JV game that I know, at least as a freshman and sophomore. Underclassmen play way bigger roles today than they did even 10 years ago.

Lol you are funny eky you alway have something to say about this or that sometime I think you are McDaniel dad or something like he is the greatest to ever play the game I give him his do's I was ask when he was a freshman who do I think would start at point for clay and I told Robert McDaniel was the best point guard he had at the time so we know he can play but the Allen kid is the sorriest 6'8 to be in this region since Matt St. John but McDaniel either play like he should or daddy will take him out back and have a talk with him and you know what I mean when it come to his dad.
10-30-2013, 09:20 AM
There were some very good underclassmen, but most of the best teams last year were dominated by seniors. Clay and Harlan County each had four seniors starting in the regionals finals. North and Middlesboro also had four senior starters each in the semifinals. I think South and Corbin had four seniors and Pineville had five.

-_- Wrote:I think clay will be good 10 points better then everyone else in the region is a joke and for me I think on paper that Jackson county has the best 5 starter in the region far as a team to me but what they don't have is the winning mentality they need that is the difference between them and clay when you put on the clay uniform something happens in your mind the Jackson and bells Knox or who ever you play they should not beat you that is what makes clay better then most school in the 13th region not the talent because I can look at clay 5 and then look and Jackson 5 and I would take Jackson 5 and not clay 5 but i would take 2 of clay 5 but I am looking at a team thing and not just one player that is just my opinion and we know that everyone has got one lol but this one is true for me
This may be the longest single sentence I have ever read. nicker:

If I am not mistaking, Whitley County beat a Harlan County team this summer with Miller still playing for the Black Bears. Is Whitley Co. going to be a contender with Williamsburg and Corbin in their district?
10-30-2013, 09:53 AM
They split two scrimmages. Whitley played very hard and HCHS was pretty flat in the scrimmage at LMU.
The 50th is wide open. The coaches actually have Williamsburg as the favorite. I'd probably give the edge to South Laurel. South had a pretty solid group behind the starters.

HDE Wrote:I was talking about JV, but I looked it up and Pineville won 39-30 at Pineville, so it was my mistake.
I guess I remember thinking that was a moral victory. Ford, Longworth, Ledbetter, Collett and Robbins scored all the points for Pineville (three juniors, two sophomores last year) in the JV, which is the probable starting lineup this year for the varsity. Harlan basically had a middle school team playing with eighth graders Busroe, Wilson and Saylor scoring all but two points.
Pineville won 67-62 in overtime in the varsity game. Pineville lost five starters from that team. Harlan lost three starters and two reserves, plus they added a good player, so I would say Harlan has the advantage there.
Jackson County should be the favorite in the All A. After that, I think Middlesboro, Barbourville, Harlan, Williamsburg and Pineville could all be very competitive.
Pineville only lost 4 starters, The Collett boy started most games for Pineville & putting harlan in front is ridiculous. Pineville has a much more athletic team than last year and im sure the defense will be better as well.

-__- please go back to school and learn what a sentence is. You know nothing about CC bball, McDaniel, Allen, nor Robert Marcum.

Jeffrey, Philpot, Skinner, Asher and Simpson started the last Pineville game I saw. I know Collett did start quite a bit too, but I think those five seniors were there at the end.
They will be more athletic, but not nearly as big.
I was just listing those other teams after Jackson County. I didn't have them in an order.
10-31-2013, 08:05 AM
I think Harlan is gonna have a nice team this year. I'll pick them over Pineville

I'm with you on South Laurel being the favorite with Williamsburg ahead of both Corbin and Whitley Co. This will be a rebuilding year for Corbin and I wouldn't be surprised to see 2-3 underclassmen either starting or with prominent roles.

Does anyone have any idea how good of a player the Garrison kid who moved to Corbin from Knox Central is? I think he is a sophomore.

It doesnt matter to me how down Corbin is, they will still beat both Wburg and Whitley for that 2nd spot, and its very possible that they win district because South isnt a clear favorite, just has more returning.
Its almost become laughable to watch Piterowski toy with other coaches in this district. Nobody is anywhere near his level. With great talent at a big school, Pietrowski would win multiple titles. At Corbin, he'll conintue to outcoach most of the bad 13th region coaches.

which i watched afew practices, but just talked to there assisant coach and he said most talent he's seen since the 2003-2004 tiger team....griffin, mitchell, jones. that was a tough tiger team gotta admit.........

Didnt that one kid off that team play varsity as an eight grader?
I cant remember which one it was but i remember there was an 8th grade kid dunking on some teams back then.

Just about everybody on that 2003-2004 team could dunk......

I think a lot of people are over looking the Barbourville Tigers this year. Although they lost their leading scorer Mills to graduation, they still return 3 starters and altogether have 6 seniors that have been together since middle school. Tanner Moore does an excellent job at running point guard, he is a smart player and very composed to make up for not being as athletic. Also when Alexander Phipps gets hot from 3, teams better watch out. They really need a pure scorer but Coach Phipps will get everything lined out. Look for Dinky Phipps to get his 600th win this year along with another trip to the regional tournament. Good luck Tigers!!

Sebastian, Barbourville is absolutely terrible. Pineville is going to run that district homeboy. Get out of here with that garbage.

Tony is by far the best coach in the district but as district champion he has lost to district runner=ups in the 1st round of region last 2 years, Mboro and Pineville.

I cant disagree with that.
I think Tony is the best coach in the region, I really do.
His talent at Corbin has fallen over the past 4 or 5 years though. It makes schools like South and Whitley look really bad because they just cant ever catch up. South hasnt been the same since Wright left, and you know as well as anyone that Whitley will always have problems with the boys bball program with the way things are set up.
One thing you have to give Tony though, hes won region with less!

I have to give Mike Jones some props at Harlan County......Plus he was clays coach from 2000-2005.....he done a fine job there too........he's always been one of the best coaches in the region for a while now.....I always had respect for jones...

I heard Corbin has lost some younger kids to transfer. I don't know where though. Is this true?

I know they lost one kid to LCA.

Really don't see where you all get that Clay is better than Jackson from? Clay beat Jackson by 1, 2 times last year and Clay lost 4 starters and Jackson lost 1. Jackson is by far the favorite in the 13th region, noone will compete with them. The Allen kid will be shut down, he isnt as good as everyony puts him up to be, Jake just takes up space, where Clay countys original back up center from last year should be, hes better than Jake!
