Open Job: Hazard
(05-14-2025, 08:27 AM)BlackHawk Wrote: Unsure if it is true but I was told there were some that transferred already.
Heard that also. And I guess there’s no rule against a coach “following “ kids. So they could hire Huff now and avoid scrutiny. Pretty weak stuff. Perry Central will be the beneficiary of this master plan. They stand to pick up Hazard’s best two players and Hazard may not make it to region play. Just have to set back and watch.
(05-14-2025, 08:13 AM)Chin Strap Wrote: I wish Hazard would go ahead an announce the hire. I always have looked at Hazard as a classy school system who did things the classy way. But that isn’t the case, doing this whole thing waiting to release the coaching name until kids enroll is some low class bs. Using kids like that will always come back to haunt you. I’ve lost all respect for the Admin at Hazard most of all Eddie Browning. This whole search looks like the football coach was calling the shots. When you use kids the way they have (Huff, Browning, Chandler) you deserve to be run out of town when it goes bad. I cheer for every 14th school at the state level, but I can’t wait to see Hazard Basketball and Football take a nose dive which is what will happen maybe not this year but soon, you do not use kids as pawns in grown up games.

well said!

So who’s it looking like over in Hazard? I’ve seen a bunch of Huff comments
I been hearing the name John Noble for a few days. This could get interesting.
This thread needs to end with this post because here is what is happening. Casey Huff is going to be named the new head coach at Hazard High School. He is bringing Gibson boys and Osborne with him. They transferred to the school on Monday to avoid following a coach rule. I am thinking he will be named coach by the end of the week.

Staying from Hazards team last year
1. Seth Caudill- Senior
2. Tucker Johnson- Senior
3. Kincaid- Junior

Leaving
1. Dalton Combs- Senior

I would be surprised if Combs leaves. He was about to go to Knott before they let Huff go. But if he does, Caudill is the key piece to keep. He is the best returning player in the 14th.
Haven't seen anything made to the public yet but have heard through the mill that Huff to Hazard is basically a done deal.

Billy knows what he speaks on.
Combs may have a change of heart but as of now he is PCC bound. Not sure how that will work out. Maybe he wants out of Caudills shadow, but he may find the floor is even smaller when there is less talent to focus on. Having said that, PCC could bring in more talent as well. Will be plenty of moving this summer.

Huff will have talent to compete and win region. Which he has always done with less talented rosters. The guy who keeps saying there are laws against transferring may realize that there are loopholes to all rules. And maybe he will realize hazard been getting kids eligible since Johnny Cox. Probably before. Al or Happy weren’t around then either. The Knott kids will be eligible.

Coach Huff will do an excellent job at Hazard. Basketball junkie, student of the game, and is so early in his coaching career still. He has so much room for growth, and that is scary good for Hazard and its community. They need to get behind this hire if Coach Huff is the man they go with.

When it is all said and done I think they will end up with the 2 Gibson boys and Osborne. All 3 are already enrolled in the school. There is an outside chance they get Amburgey but I think he is staying at Knott. Probably around a 20% chance he is going to Hazard. With that said Hazard will be the favorite once again. They have been the favorite for 3 years in a row but have no regional titles to prove it. If everything holds I think the difference in next season is they will have the best player in the region in Caudill.

I heard Johnny Cox say in an interview the reason he transferred to Hazard from Fleming-Neon was his dad had to find work and he got a job there.
I think the Cox family’s actual origins go back to Lee County, Ky before they moved to Letcher County.
But big transfers go back decades. There was a Shepperd boy who was a great player for a now defunct small Letcher County school called Kingdom Come back in the 1950s. Locals jokingly called him “the little shepherd of Kingdom Come”. But he eventually left the school and transferred to Carr Creek and was instrumental in their winning the 1956 KHSAA state tournament.

Debatable. Do believe Cox played that year. Then Hazard received a kind word from a source with khsaa that playing him any longer may result in suspension and forfeiture. They put him in the cooler the rest of that season.

could be wrong but that was how the story was always told when I heard it. Plenty of more have gotten eligible at Hazard. Some would be eligible, ineligible, and eligible again all in one season.

Just seen where Hazard is hosting a meet and greet Friday. They had a flyer posted on Facebook. Unsure why they haven’t went ahead and made a public announcement since everyone knows. Weird.

Back in the early 2000s Steven Sizemore scored around 12 points for Breathitt in a Tuesday game and scored around 10 for Hazard on Friday of the same week. Since he was an 8th grader he was automatically eligible. And Hazard picked up a phenomenal player in Sizemore’s sister Charlotte, who along with the Alexander girl eventually won them a state All A championship and a KHSAA state championship.

i said this last week. But other schools will still say this rule applies because hazard officials told huff he had the job but wanted to wait to make if official until he got some players to transfer to hazard. And what player has ever transferred to a school that they didn’t know who the coach was going to be? Knott has already filed player tampering with the KHSAA. That plus a couple other schools putting in against this might make enough noise and the KHSAA don’t like when schools try to make them look stupid

Bentley has burned a few bridges in Hazard I do believe.
His wife don’t want to come back this way

Maybe it’s to showcase the players that transferred as well.
They haven’t because they are going to try and get around KHSAA rule that says you can’t follow a coach to a new school. Three players transferred this week to a school that didnt have a coach. Why would a player do that unless they knew who the coach was going to be.

He is bringing Gibson boys and Osborne with him. They transferred to the school on Monday to avoid following a coach rule. I am thinking he will be named coach by the end of the week.
i said this last week.

Staying from Hazards team last year
1. Seth Caudill- Senior
2. Tucker Johnson- Senior
3. Kincaid- Junior

Leaving
1. Dalton Combs- Senior

Been done since last week. Not a secret around Hazard. Just had to wait on the the finer details (players)
You do realize Johnny Cox had to sit out a year don’t you

Cleaves Washington was a fun ride too.

Maybe if your brother gets the AD position at Perry he can start a petition with the khsaa and get a ban put on Hazard. What a glorious day it would be for all of your family.
