I will agree this year is the best chance they have ever had!!! These kids are really hungry and they have that certain swagger about themselves!!!!
This could very well be the best team they have ever had. With the tough schedule they have. It will make them ready for a deep playoff run!! :flame:

Looks like the panthers are getting back the kid that was going to transfer to lex Cath, guess he had a change of heart.. But either way he should be a practice Monday.

Cant wait to make the up 25E this year.
Should be a good one.
I know Whitley and Knox have played numerous times and was even in that same old 3A district way back in the day, but when was the last time Knox beat Whitley? Some of you older folks might remember. I know the last time the two played were in 03 and 04, both Whitley wins, but before that it was my junior year in 2000 i believe, and i know we didnt lose to them post 1990. I like seeing the history on local teams. Any of you KC fans remember some of the history between the two?

Got to agree with you. I think the QB spot will be well taken care of. My son played with him last year on team KY. Really strong arm and not afraid to run against the big boys. Cant wait to see him develope for the next few years but should be good this year. If the line can keep them off him a couple of seconds he will find the reciever.

My best memory involving Whitley was taking our 8th grade team over there when Whitley had not lost an 8th grade game in many years. They dressed over 100 players including a full 8th and a full 7th. We unloaded our 30 combined 7th and 8th graders and edged them out in a close battle. The next week they brought 3 busses to Knox and when they stretched it took up so much of the field I our team was intimidated. But thanks to players like J. Canady and J. Barger who would go on to be a big part of KC success - they defended the home field.
Whitley will be a tough opponent for sure as they always have a solid team. And history may well be on their side. But the kids wearing the Panther uniforms these days have no memory of losing records and winless seasons. All they have done since they were in Jr ball is win. That pride will carry them through the toughest schedule in the mountains by far.

Made some mistakes with a few balls but also threaded some needles and showed why he is there. Over time, all he will do is get better.
Thanks for the kind words. Looking forward to seeing you guys again at a camp or two next year. With the broken arm - he only did one camp this year and that was a week after out of cast. Still recovering strength and flexibility but within a month should be 100 percent. One thing is certain - no more basketball... LOL.

Over the last twelve years that two have only played twice, which is the 03 and 04 seasons.
I think they may have played every year in the 90's, im not sure.
Either way, I just like looking at the history of teams we havent played in a while.
Whitley middle schools number have always been good. Its hard getting that to translate over into the high school game. Theres been a lot of GREAT teams come through that middle school. I remember several years under Coach Fox that the middle school, both grades, didnt lose a single game. Back before all this middle school association stuff, Whitley was in a conference with Bell, Mboro (who always had great middle school teams), Harlan, North Knox, South Knox, among others.
There is some great middle school football programs in this state that doesnt always translate to high school.
For example, the Pulaski schools, Whitley schools, Clay County, Bell County schools etc, have always been very good at middle school football especially in the 90's and early to mid 00's.
I remember when i was in eighth grade (a very long time ago nicker we dressed nearly 60 eighth graders and didnt lose a game in middle school, both 7th and 8th, however, by the time our senior year rolled around, that number had dropped to 17.

From what I've found on past games Whitley had owned KC since about 98. So if KC has won against Whitley it was prior to the 98 season. From the scores I've seen on khsaa only about one of the games could even be considered a good game. But I believe the will change this year. Should be one heck of a game.

Were talking about two completely different programs than the ones of the 90's and early 00's.
Knox's football program was almost non existent for the most part up until a few years ago. And, now, there consistently on the right track. I'm not sure about pre 90, but after 90, most of the games between the two were complete blowouts in favor of Whitley, but it definitely wont be this year.
When was the last time Corbin and Knox met?

We have a similar issue with some great Middle School kids not making the transition to HS. Some pick a sport like basketball to focus on which always drives me nuts since only 5 get on the court at one time and usually not the football guys.
I will say the turn around for Knox Central football began when a great couple of guy named David King and Steve Bailey brought Jr Football to Knox County. That directly benefited the MS and HS in ways that can't be measured but are obvious. That first District, Region, and maybe someday when Highlands dies off, State Banner should have a big thank you to those two for getting it off the ground and the dozens of volunteers who have ran it over the years since them.

That was the same team that was a few seconds from handing Bell a loss that would have precluded them from that last Banner. That game was a comedy errors and getting plowed over top of. But they learned from it and went on to have a great season. I hope some of the guys on the team were there that night watching and can recall that gut sinking feeling when we play Corbin our last game this year.

This may be a little off topic here but, that is something that always drives me nuts as well!! There are some terrific football players that would rather focus solely on basketball and end up coming off the bench for most if not all of their career than be a starter for 2 or even 3 years in football and I will never understand it!

I keep hearing that Knox has no district championships. They won in 1975.

You cannot give enough credit to the feeder programs!! It makes all the difference in the world.
07-24-2013, 08:23 PM
Without the feeder program KC would not have the numbers it has now. Just left practice and had 64 kids. That speaks volumes on how well the feeder program has worked for KC!!
07-24-2013, 08:51 PM
64 is enough to have a nice foundation for a 4A school. Knox seems here to stay.
07-25-2013, 12:09 AM
If the up coming class are any indication the panthers have a really strong foundation, with only 9 sr this year and about 20 8th grades coming up I would say the foundation is strong. Look for the panthers to be good this year and really good the next several.

Twenty 8th graders sounds great. I know JagSwag was talking about their feeder schools in another thread. His son is also an 8th grader, and apparently a great football player.
It speaks well of the Knox Central program, having such a strong team and great prospects on the horizon.
I love football!!

Its all about the feeder programs, but more about getting the kids to stick with it.
Whitley will dress around 45-50 eighth graders and the class might not have ten seniors on it.

Panthers have left for camp today!!! Going to be a long camp won't be back till Thursday, should be some good hitting going on.. These boys like to hit, they will beat themselves up and have fun, hope no one gets hurt..
07-31-2013, 10:04 PM
Went up to camp today the panthers looked pretty good. Still early to really say just how good they are. But I can tell you this they are mean and hungry. There was some hard hitting that was for sure. They were knocking the crap out of each other.. The defense should be very strong again. The offense looked good too, although the Qb needs to settle down a little bit, I think he will be ok once he gets some more reps under his belt, and learns to make his reads a little faster.. Can't wait till scrimmage at Harlen co in a couple weeks just to see how everything looks with someone else other than ourselves..

23 more days and it will be Friday night lights once again!!!
08-01-2013, 08:50 AM
You can't compare Knox Central now to their teams in the 80's and 90's. Since Mills hit town they have done a 180. They are a very solid program now who will show up every game of every year and be competitive. They are well coached and have pride in what they are doing.

Do you know who KC will be playing at Harlan, and when the Grid O Rama will be.
