Next coach at Knox Central
William Muney Wrote:He should have not been involved. He is an idiot. The AD should be someone that knows some sports. Not a guy who owns a runners shop. :devilflam

Thats funny.

But who are some of the candidates they are looking at.
Football1 Wrote:A friend from work is on a committee that is hiring a football coach for his son's high school in the north east. He asked me if I had any thoughts on what they should ask which was alot like asking a barber if he has any thoughts on the right way to cut a short hair. This is what I suggested to him via email:

Football is about building a program more than it is a team. I would look for men who can describe an innovative plan for building a program that young men will count as instrumental in playing a part in their development toward becoming the man they were intended to be. That man would likely answer questions around that by describing a few of the following:

1. Strength and Conditioning Program: one that is flexible enough to support multi-sport athletes and demanding enough to rapidly improve an athletes 40, Bench, Squat, and Power Clean max's.

2. Recruitment: Coaches can't subscribe to "build it, they will come" nor "its built, they will stay". They should have a plan for reaching into the community to find young talent who will benefit from the program and visa versa.

3. Structure: Great football programs present a "family" atmosphere that welcomes underclassmen and gives Seniors and Juniors a roll in team leadership. Hazing must be forbidden from the outset and seniors groomed to lead by example with work ethic and character.

4. Community: will he embrace the culture and people of the area where the team plays? Every interview and radio show becomes sort of a test for a football coach to keep the support of the area.

5. Discipline: the days of the ultra rigid drill instructor type coach have passed us. Young men are not raised like today and fail to respond to that approach. Still, great coaches find a way to push even "troubled kids" to get the best out of them. Might be an area to ask a candidate to cite an example where his approach worked to get the best out of a player.

6. Tactics: Much can be said of X's and 0's and the specific Offense and Defense a coach prefers. And while they all may have a core plan here - the best ones will want to carefully assess the players he inherits and bend around that nucleus a play book that maximizes the strengths of those kids.

7. Assistant Coaches: no sport relies more on the guys who work for the head coach. Does he have his own he must bring? Can he work with those who remain. How does he manage them. A question that might provide insight into this is "what instructions do you give the guys who sit in the booth so you get the best information to make in game decisions on the field?".

I hope the folks who are selecting our coach asks these questions.

Probably the best points I have seen in a HC thred in a while!
Talk is That John Chapman from Pike Central is intrested in this Job!!

Looks like Chapman wants to jump ship before the KHSAA sinks it. :flame:

Thanks. When my friend posed the question I feared my response might have been more than he was asking for but he and the committee actually ended up using it as a guide. Not bad when an old country boy from KY can help pick a coach in Boston.

And for the record, the answers that I know Scotty Russell has for each of those areas is why he has the support of the players and so many parents and fans. It is great to see the widespread interest in this position and I am all for them running a full selection process. But nobody in this process is a better fit than Russell and I really believe our folks will get this right.
Site Base member told me that one of the board members S.W. does not want Coach Russell, said that board member and principal are very tight.
IMO Knox is running this to close to spring practice for an outsider to come in and do an effective job with spring practice. A new coach will need time to meet coaches and get things together...his system and any new guys we may want. Not to mention the players and develop some type of relationship with others. With this type of wait...things look good for Russell. For those that think spring practice is not that important....for a new coach it is major.

HOw much better could you get that Scotty Russell? Get on with the hiring. What is wrong with this administration?
Not in the community or system. We cut ours short ....no interviews....I don't think that was the plan, but when things heated up in the community we hired...or should I say made it public.

Agree.
Nothing in the world wrong with taking one's time and getting it right.
Schools that are making coaching changes can apply for an extension period on spring practice. This would give a new coach the opportunity to get up to speed.
Heard Copley was in the final 3. Anyone know if this is true?
Who are the final 3?
The final three are russell, copley, and Adams who is from alabama. The rummor is he has a couple state champinships. I still believe Russell is the frontrunner. The final round of interviews are tomorrow. Hopefully a coach by tomorrow night.

Yes - and frankly he is a very strong candidate. I stand by what I said about Russell but from what I have learned about Copley he would do a fine job too. It is nice to see our program have access to several quality candidates.
3 interviews tonight. Hopefully a decision Monday.
Telling players and Assist Coaches in the morning. Then announcment goes public. Russell, Copley, or Adams will be blessed to lead one of the premier programs in the Mountains for 2011.

Have to give Knox Admin. some props on keeping everyone guessing till the end!!
Knox doesn't have that person sitting in the office pumping information to the community everyday.
Still no news.
Scotty russell is the man
^ has he been hired?
are they waiting on espn to show up.
they can't find Chris Berman.
Scottie Russel is the new head coach at Knox Central.
What went on today.
Those involved in the process did an excellent job and deserve our thanks. They took their time, researched the applicants, kept quiet and avoided the rumor mills. Some will say that Russell was an easy choice and I agree, but it was too important of a decision not to look at what was out there and make sure they were getting the best available. Congrats to Coach Russell.
