I hope so too. I would love to see the rivalry get to a Bell/Rock type of status in the future.

I agree with Mamma Bear, I think it is mostly meant to be for fun. However, we do have to remember some of these people are actual teenagers, and you know as well as i do that they like to push it to the limit. Sometimes they may go a little to far, but I'm sure if you met one of these kids face to face you would find that they are not the punks they sometimes seem to be.
Good luck to the Bears on a successful 1st year...............
Go Cougars !!!!!!

Give us fans some advice on our first year Falcon! You have been there and have some insight. We are just so excited over here!

Well Mama, all I can say is that we prayed alot......our first year of consolidation was really tough. We went 4 & 6 the first 2 years we were together. So last year was such a fun time. Keep the excitement going no matter how the games go, I believe that keeps the boys up and they will need that should they get down.

I agree fully, and I have asked mine to stop being so confrontational... and he says he doesn't mean anything , but that's not how it comes off. I truly do wish the Bears the best...................But, my blood does run BLUE !!!:letsparty

Sound advice. I think we will more than likely win more than we lose this year, but our main goal as fans are gonna be ENTHUSIASM!!!! :letsparty

Did you Letcher Central folks have to put up with this crap about being a 5A school playing a 3A schedule?
Seems like a lot of people are bitter about the situation and my feelings are that nothing can really be done to fix it so stop complaining about it. Like I said in another post it's like they are afraid of playing better competition. Most schools play non district games out of their class anyway.

LCC was immediately placed in their correct classification in the old 4 class system....
Can't you see why people are upset? Non-district schedules against larger class teams have nothing to do with people's arguements, it's about the playoffs when every team you play is a 3A school with 3A enrollment.
I agree that people should just drop it, it's already decided and no changes can be made. But to have the attitude of "We're here. Sucks for them but not for us so they should just shut up" is a horrible way to approach it.
Had the KHSAA stuck to the original draft and you had to travel to Shelby County for district games, and had to play Lou. Trinity in the playoffs I am sure you would be singing another tune right now and it would involve how unfair it is because of Trinity's numbers.

How should we approach it? Realistically, are we gonna have to apologize for every W we get this year? I know sometimes when you are typing something that it can "sound" different then how you mean it. I am not being sarcastic when I ask, if it were you, and you were a Harlan County fan, how would you approach it? How can we change all the negativity? I can tell you what's happening. Mountain people are clanish and when they feel threatened, they group together and attack back.
So if we win a game this year and are so proud of our kids, then there's gonna be the group that say "you cheated" and then the other group that says, "Well you should've won, your school is so much bigger, ect". One good thing about living in the mountains is that we are protected on all sides and the kids will not know that the rest of the state wishes us to fail because of the KHSAA's decision to place us in 3A instead of 5A unless one of them gets on the internet and reads it. I am not gonna partake in their negativity, I'm all about dabears!!

All in all guys remember we are mountain football. We play against each other, but if harlan goes to state then I am rooting for you all to win. I sure you will do the same for us. You guys are going through what we went through three years ago. No matter what happens remember that it takes time. Remember we won two regional titles first year.(Vollyball, and girls basketball). The 2nd year we won another regional in baseball and indiviaual one in wrestling. In three years we have won eleven distric championships. The point in bringing up other sports is that good things are going to happen to you guys. When you have consolidation it is the same as waking up a sleeping dragon. Yes we got our buts handed to us by Highlands last year, but we put 200+yards against them, and scored twice by a quarterback who had a pulled hamstring. We forced two turnovers in the first quarter. We earned respect, and it made our team better this year. They same will happen to you guys. Good things will come to Harlan County. Root for us and we will root for you. "Unless we play each other then the gloves come off.

I am not here to bash anyone. I am here representing mountain sports. We have to come together and show the rest of the state that we are for real.

For starters, I wouldn't criticize people who have a valid reason to be upset as "Complainers, bellyachers, threatened, scared" as some Black bear cohorts have. This has came off to me as feeling absolved of the whole situation and as if they are relishing in the circumstance. For example, when Patriot made the comments above it really struck a nerve with me as arrogant. You have been excellent yourself, MamaBear, in tryignt o eb humble..but even in your post I highlighted a point that could easily be misconstrued as arrogance
Secondly, the detractors will come, and some will be straight up ignorant in their arguements. For example: I expect alot of hostility from Powell County fans when the bottom line is Cawood, Cumberland, or Evarts probably could have all three beat them individually. For these instances it is probably simply better to "Act Like You Have Been There Before". Just be grateful in victory.
The bottom line is Harlan is in a bad situation in terms of criticism that they never asked to be in. Mercer County left a badddddddd taste in people's mouths because of the circumstances involving the consolidation, the way their fans showed up in droves trash talking and making huge promises, and the way that they ran the score up on all the teams in their path. I was closer to the Mercer situation than most and I can tell you first hand that the consolidation fo harlan County and Mercer are very different, and Harlan does not deserve the blame on this (the KHSAA does).

no matter what we will root for you guys in harlan. I for one hope you do win a state titel. A state title in the moutains are special no matter where it is.

Yes I can see why people are upset, but people are upset about a lot of things that don't get the time spent that people have spent bashing Harlan County for something that was totally out of our control. The complete and total ignorance of some statements hurt my head. I have been told by two people on here that LCC started in 3A so I'm guessing the OLD 4 class system was equivalent to them being a 3A. YES I think people should just drop it. Nothing can be done about it, but a bunch of us getting into forums wars! The KHSAA has nothing to do with us not being in 6A the school didn't get the enrollment to compete at that level. Although had we been put there you can bet your bottom dollar this Black Bear wouldn't have complained about it!!! This community is so excited about the new school and football team we are just happy to be playing. I'm sure Harlan County wouldn't turn down playing Trinity or St. X or anyone else, I hate to sound cliché but to be the best you have to play the best. We are traveling to Grayson County VA to play a game just to have a game and I understand that Grayson is a good team in VA and about 4 hours away from Harlan County so traveling has nothing to do with it. My personal feeling is that the people that complain about this are the same ones that go to a coach and complain that little Johnny isn't playing enough and ride the coach about his decisions. They are kids playing a sport, no matter how many kids are on the sideline Harlan County is still has the same amount on the field as the other team! To me it's like saying we don't want to play someone that is good. What kind of lesson does that teach? I say we just agree to disagree. I am also an EKU alum so I guess we have something in common

Don't get me wrong, the intent of my post wasn't to call out the Harlan fanbase and chastise people. Mama Bear asked a question and I felt I could offer an explanation based on things I have read.
There is no need for people to continue waste time discussing this issue, you and me included. As I said you can't hold any animosity towards Harlan County for playing the hand they are dealt, especially when they weren't the ones trying to deal their own hand.
The Black bear fans have alot of anxiety and it is rightfully so. But thanks to a shady Mercer County situation you an expect backlash. The key is to be humble, be respectful, and let it play out. As mentioned earlier, what really steamed people about Mercer was the cockiness of their fans as they won, the way they ran up the score on their opponents, and an overall perception of lack of sportsmanship. If Harlan's fans can mimic what I am sure that Larkey will instill on the field this will fade in time.
BTW, what year at EKU?

Those non-district games out of their class don't mean a thing. These smaller schools play bigger schools to be better prepared for district games. Afraid to play better competition? Makes no sense. Harlan County has 1400 kids. That is even huge for 5A football. About 15 more boys and you would be playing 6A football. Now it's not your fault you are put in this situation but it's really not fair to all the small schools playing you for district games. Another way of looking at it you will have more boys (700) than some 3A schools have kids (Henry County 667 total students). What does numbers have to do with it? Harlan County over 90 players. Most 3A schools 35-40 players. So stop complaining about people complaining.
