It is amazing to me how you guys put down Wagger. Welch and Dotson did the same things when they were in there.I hate to see any coach get done bad but what goes aroud comes around.Tussey did a fine job and McCoy took it from her and gave it to Butcher that is a fact. Many coaches want a team that is already built because it is hard to build a program. Pike County is known for doing coaches wrong. When one adm. does a coach wrong and they are on your side life is good but when the wheels are turned life is not fair, give me a break! The right thing to do is give the job back to Tussey.I know Wagger and he is a good man!!

I don't know how good they will do with Tussey I think they to bring in a new coach who love defense.

What goes around comes around? Two wrongs don't make a right! You must not know him too well because his name is Wagner. .

does anyone have any ideas on who may be in consideration for the job opening?
04-11-2008, 10:26 PM
Why would you want it!! You know that your days are numbered as soon as you get it. Be it that you dont win the region or someone else wants it. I REALLY dont konw but did was he a head coach before he got the PCC job?
04-11-2008, 11:38 PM
I don't know him. I have nothing bad to say about Butcher but he did not deserve the job the way he got it period.Let them build their own team and go through growing pains like she did.I wish the girls the very best.I hope she gets it back if she wants it plus he was an outsider and she was a county girl.

I think they should look at their assitants first before the hire anyone. Mercer could coach that team and be quite successful.
I think if Tussey doesn't want it then you will see Amanda Collins there. I wouldn't be suprised if Bobby Spears doesn't try to get it. Also some of the assistant coaches in the region will apply.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Heather Birchfield wife to Phillip who was once an assistant to the boys program last year being the run into the regional championship losing to ER. They have always talked about wanting the job and now that it is open I would love to see her apply for it having him helping her. If this happens you can guarantee to see the old boys crew on the bench with the exception of David Rowe which was one heck of a group of guys and coaches. Now with that said Heather has had previous coaching experience as an assistant at Belfry where she played her high school ball. She has an excellent eye and mind for the game. That is one who I will be looking to apply for the job.

When was the last time she coached? And I am pretty sure she played high school ball at Fleming Neon, not Belfry.

FIRST of all i never mentioned our coach....
our coach didn't have a winning team with a winning season when he took the job.. and for a first year head coach he had to overcome quite a bit. HIS COACHING ABILITY has been proven with the Lady Hornets and their fantastic season...
just my opinion.....
thanks... i am glad JR got that awesome 5 win team when he came to Phelps... HAHA
and Butcher was good but not great he had a good team when he came to Central...

Heather played her high school years at Fleming Neon and then college basketball at Pikeville College. I was at Pikeville College when she was and she was a great ball player.

It has been a while since she has coached but she and Phillip make it to just about all the games and have a really close connection with the players and school. IMO that would be a good move, it would give some stability keeping ppl that have connections with the school in the system and like Hawk Rules said we need a good defensive coach which is what Heather and Phillip focus on more than anything.

Mercer is no longer at Belfry. She was put back at Pike Central at the beginning of this year. I would like to find another athletic program in the Pike County district that had an asst. coach jerked out one season, shipped to their archrival, and then the next season the head coach is made itinerant between two schools. But you know what? You won't find one. And yet still...both years they made it to the regional finals.

But I agree they have done anything and everything to see that program fall over the past two years. If Collins-Stiltner comes on board Mercer and Coomer will stay IMO

Starting off with Josh Pierece (spelling), his wife Savannah (tennis coach) and now Stephen Butcher. For years we all have known that once WAGNER got in office Pike Central was going to be walking the plank. The only thing he has done since he has been office is made sure the new Elementary school was built which was not his complete doing.
Yeah, Josh Preece, Susanna (sp?) Collins, Stephen Butcher, and David LaRocco all lost their coaching jobs in the past few years. I have no idea why. All of these mentioned were unbelievable! I miss all of them and wish them the best. I really hope someone deserving gets it, and keeps it!!

He went to the final four. He obviously did something right. It doesn't matter if he inherited a good team or bad team, look at what he did with them.
On the other note, he didn't get that awesome 5 win team. He got them and the Riley kid who could add 8-10 wins for any 5 win team. Barring any more "transfers" we'll see where they are in two years.

I hope we are in a good position. The young girls we have coming up are talented and with continued work on the fundamentals we should be o.k. I just hope the girls learn the proper way to play basketball, learn some life skills, how to deal with adversity, and above all - HAVE FUN. Is winning and losing important, in the overall scheme of things no, its not life and death, it is just a game. I am just here to teach young kids how to play a game! If I can look back after I have retired and feel good about it, then I did a good job!

Nice use of language for a donating member. And if you wanna talk about the Phelps program, start your own thread.

Anything new on the coaching front at Central?

I think the nice young man that sit on the bench SC should be the next Lady Hawk coach and Mercer and Coomer help him.

I have heard from a very reliable source, that the coaching job will probably given to someone already in the feeder system. There are no jobs available and and Pike County is planning cuts this year.

Might want to check your sources. Through the grapevine, a 57th district girls coach may be in the running for the job. hh:
