I was told that they did in fact have tryouts yesterday, and there were a lot of players there. Also, Hagers son will be on the roster. I was also told that all the players that quit would be back on the team if they choose to do so.

Letâs see how this plays out with the parents of kids already on the team.

New coach, sounds like he is starting over. Don't see anything wrong with that if that is the way he wants to do things. Good luck to Coach Hager, he will do a great job. irateSho

Honestly if Hager wins now starting over 3 months late he did an amazing job. Canât believe they let them have try outs, kind of an injustice to the kids that stuck it out. This whole deal is a shi* storm
Evidently the coach is at more fault here, the kids that quit shouldnât be punished. Of course they shouldnât be throwed right in , but evidently there was a problem and it wasnât just one or two kids quitting. Very hard situation for all involved but if Hager does things right then they may just be able to pull back together in time to be dangerous in the regional. Kids arenât like kids used to be, you canât coach old school and get out of kids what coaches used to, Iâm sorry but thatâs the facts. Any old school coaches that are still around have adapted to todayâs kids or they have a bunch of kids that wonât play for them. Thatâs why you see so many complaints now days. Iâm not putting all the blame on the coaches but you have to adapt with the times or get out. I guess you can put a lot of the blame on parents or lack there of parents for some, because kids get by with way more stuff today. Again times have changed, accept it or move on.

Also, look at college and pro sports, a lot of teams are going with younger coaches. Why? Because they can relate with todayâs athletes.

Sounds like to me they want everyone to get a trophy over there to me. A lot of local counties are being ran that way now and its really starting to show.

Spurlock isnât that hardcore of a coach, he expects kids to play hard, demands respect, and doesnât play favorites.
They made that much long before Larry was super or JJ was coach. Itâs just stayed the same over time I guess.

What a joke to the kids who have been in the gym working and running each day to get better. Those kids deserve better.

The world has changed. What was once acceptable is no longer acceptable. What was once frowned upon is now accepted.
This is how the world works. While some may not view the coach's actions to be that "bad" there were 7 kids who quit because of it. The actions themselves may have not warranted a firing. But creating a culture where 7 kids see the only acceptable solution as quitting is obviously a toxic culture.
The coach may not be a bad person, but the health of the program is on his shoulders and the health of the program suffered mightily under his watch.
The women's program at UK went through a similar situation a couple of years ago under Matthew Mitchell. Several players transferred and he replaced his entire staff. Details of what happened never really came out but what's obvious is that Mitchell recognized that HE needed to make changes.
That's the part that I don't think that Spurlock completely understands. He seems intent to passively blame others. Sort of like when Bobby Knight was forced out at IU. It was always somebody else's fault. Spurlock needed to evolve as a coach. And he didn't. That's why we are where we are.

I agree. Spurlock is a hard coach but a good one. I think a lot of times parents have a harder time accepting this kind of coaching instead of the players. A good hard coach is never easy on his players. He does what needs to be done to bring out the best in them. Some find it offensive while others find it being tough. Kids need toughness, Iâm afraid they are becoming way to soft as the years progress. Sad situation all around.

I think it's an egregious thing. Let me tell you what, this world is going to hell in a hurry. You holler clowns of Floyd County are leading us there

Dude is a great coach. These people didnât want tough they didnât want to get better they wanted what was easy. Some places want to win, some places want it to be easy and everyone to play. I guess beaver creek is the last one of those two

That is true, but that was more to try to get quality coaches to Martin County, than anything else.

Their roster has been updated on the KHSAA site, it looks like 7 of the players that quit have returned to the team.

The next coach will face the same problems.
Just to clear some things up. The next coach wonât Face these problems . Spurlock is a class A asshole who belittles children. Always has . Had numerous kids quit at Sheldon Clark including BJ Moore who was far more talented than anyone else on this site . He plays favorites and itâs why he as hired. He was Henry Webbâs âboyâ and it got him a job he didnât deserve to begin with.

Beaver creek got the shaft from the new placement of the school. I would be upset to if my kids had hour and half bus rides because someone made some money off a little land .

If they've had kids quit and transfer after Spurlock resigned (which they did) the problem is deeper than Spurlock.

I would say those actions was already out in motion when the Superintending asked spurlock if he was ok with a 3 game suspension. Very nice of him to ask if his suspension was ok.

Same stuff happened at Sheldon Clark. Perry Central, now Floyd. At some point you have to quit blaming the kids.
01-27-2019, 08:58 PM
I thought BJ Moore quit as a junior but then came back to play his senior season under Kevin Spurlock? As talented as he was, he could have transferred and played elsewhere but he chose to come back to Sheldon Clark and play even though Spurlock was still the coach. I give him credit for coming back to play for his home school.
If the same stuff happened at Sheldon Clark and Perry Central, then why wasnt this taken to the media like the Floyd Central story was? If their was legitimate proof of mistreatment/complaints, then the parents should have spoken up. Or if they did speak up, why didnt it come out? I am honestly curious about that.
