Every year since 2010.
Kind of easy when the other 3 teams combined have been lucky to win 10 games a year.

Looks like his pass ratio is about even with Belfry and Johnson Central. 2 teams that are pretty good.

Larkey can coach. He is old school but he has won more than his fair share.

And two teams that struggle against good passing teams.
Theres a difference in being one of the best teams in EKY, where EVERYBODY runs the ball, and going out in the state and playing teams who can spread it out.
Johnson Central never could get over the Highlands hump and Belfry never could get past Central. Luckily for Belfry, 3A started a major decline last year in good West talent and it continued into this year.
Starting next year, it will start to go back to its original state.

Just got word from one of the assistants. He has been reinstated and he will be on the sidelines next week.

there is a long list of run oriented East Kentucky teams that Highlands has went through like a dose of salts.2008 Whitley County great running attack with around 5,000 yards rushing on the season was no match for Highlands.then came Harlan County that could do nothing with them either.remember Lawrence County had an awesome rushing game and they didn't have enough ability to pass either.

I wouldnt call it a major decline in the west. PT has a good team, it was just a great year for Wayne Co. Plus Central will always compete, ask Belfry as they beat them about 2 or 3 times in a row for the title.

Since Whitley is throwing the ball a little more this year I guess they could play Highlands tougher than 2008.
If Harlan County started throwing it 30 times a game now they could play Highlands closer than 2010.
Those Whitley and HCHS teams were regional champs because they were very good at what they did. If they tried to be something else, they probably wouldn't have made it as far as they did.

they would play Highlands closer if they started throwing the ball in 2000 instead of 2010.they were regional champs and not state champs like Highlands because Highlands is fundamentally sound and has a balanced attack.I don't know why east Kentucky people keep arguing over this and keep losing every single year to a team with ability to pass.seems like common sense to me that you cant move the ball against a good team that knows what you are going to do.

Belfry will argue that.

Mike didn't do anything wrong to get tossed. Just a young official who overstepped his bounds. Good Luck to Him and LCC.:Shaking:

Nobody said to throw the ball all over the place.
You are right about those teams being extremely good at what they did. They both ran threw teams here like nothing. But to play on a state level in 4A and 5A, your going to have to pass the ball atleast 35-40% of the time. Good coaches will learn every play you got and know whats coming before you snap the ball if you run it 30 times a game.
Its also something that takes years to ease into. Deciding to go 90% run to a balanced attack comes with years of practice from feeders on up.
A good example is Pulaski. Hines knew the changes had to be made and they have improved every year since 2009. Its also the reason people believe they can compete with BG this year. If they were running the ball 80-90% of the time, they would not.

I am glad Mike got reinstated!!! Great guy and awesome coach! If we win, I don't want an * beside the win. Good luck to both teams and hope for an injury free game. I am taking the Bears by 6.

It don't hurt that Hines has a helluva qb
Is say most teams with him would throw more to

Had Hines not changed up the game, Hall may have never passed the ball once in middle school and we would have never known.
Talent is easy to find in 5A schools, getting it to play and stick with its the hard part. If you do get it out, then you have to catch up with todays game.

Belfry has also lost several games they could have won due to lack of a passing game.

he has a good quarterback because he has a good program established from youth on up through highschool. he didn't learn to be a good quarterback overnight.

they were 7 of 9 with 71 yards passing and 2 touchdown passes in the championship game that they won 21-14.

We throw 6-8 times a game but we don't win a championship. My point is that you have to do what fits what you have. I honestly believe with all my heart that what coach has run for the last 6 years has been perfect for what we have had here in Harlan County. I meN my gosh, what team in our region has had the success we have had in the last 4 or 5 years?

good point but is the ultimate goal to win district or region then watch somebody else with the championship because they have a more balanced team? teams like Williamsburg didn't just get good athletes.they developed them. Skyler Griffith was a star quarterback and state champion at the middle school level.

You three guys really have it figured out.
If you could get together and coach a program you could win 5A every year.

We would but there isn't a high school in the state that pays enough.
Me at Head Coach
Demarcus as strength and conditioning coach
pj doug as my offensive coordinator
Hell, id even put 64 as my "special" teams coach.

Once you win the state every year, you'd get college jobs and the NFL.
I can read the stories now, how Gut and PJ and demarcus just used common sense to dethrone Highlands. They developed a Skylar Griffith every year in their middle school program and taught their receivers how to run like inner city kids and block like NFL tight ends for their running game and made sure to run 65 percent and pass 35 percent because that is the magical formula.
