GOREDDEVILS Wrote:I think your wrong lifting at a gym is very important because the weight room isn't always going to be open everyday of the year and i'll tell you one thing in the winter its not the warmest in the world out in the weight room i've been in there when it was 20 and 30 outside and If i had the choice of a gym or Russells weight room I would chose the warm gym with the more sophisticated weight equipment. Just because they lift on their own doesn't stop them from lifting with the team as well.:argue:

mightydog I'll tell you one thing right now the weight room is not open everyday of the year so no matter if they lift in the field house or not on cold days they still need a gym to go to when the field house is closed

I can't believe that if ther are kids who want to lift that something cant be worked out to get these kid in the fieldhouse. Not all kids can afford a gym membership. Get the parents involved, I've got a son playing in JFL, and some of us dads are already talking about grtting our sons together this off season and working them. If we had a place like the FH to work them out that would be great. If were willing to get togethe and take turns supervising our kids, maybe some of the HS dads would to. Maybe we look at other schools to see how they get it done. I just can't accept the fact that the FH is closed at times. therefore your desire to train during the off season to get bigger, stronger and faster has been DENIED! If this is the case they need to change the sign over the FH door from '' Through these doors walk the hardest working players in 3A'' to '' Through these doors walk the hardest working players in 3A when it's convenant for someone to be here to let them work'. Maybe I'm missing something, maybe they can't let them be in there at certain times for insurance reasons or something. I don't know. All I know is that every effert has to be made to get these kids hitting the weights. Couldn't it be highly stressed that at least the lineman be on the power liffting team?

I'm sure they could probably get in by talking to one of the school officials mainly sam sparks the ad. He used to be my stength and conditioning teacher. I was just saying I know that they do lock it when school is not in and to get in it would have to be by special permission. I'm sure the kids who do have gym passes if they want to lift during thanksgiving break coming up and christmas break they might have to go to the gym they have a pass at. That is unless they could get Sam Sparks or anyone with a key to come unlock it everyday during the time school is out of session and then take the time to come back and lock it.

Fitness world at Raceland does monthy memberships at $45 a month I don't know about the gym in flatwoods but i don't think the ymca does do monthly unless they started and its probably more expensive than any gym but you do have the added benefit of basketball, swimming, indoor track etc along with state of the art equipment like the other local gyms have.
#36
The best deal fitness world has is $260 for a year at $45 a month for a year would cost $540.
#37
Health flex fitness in flatwoods charges $35 per month plus you sign a 12 month contract and they charge $299 for a year.
#38
I would have to say that i'm sure there might be some parents who could not sport $35 a month but I would say most parents especially the ones who's parents still live together could fork out $35 a month.
#39
I would say their main reason for keeping it locked is to keep people from vandlelizing the the field house. The weight room leads to other areas like where all the pads helmets etc are and to the coaches office where all the game tapes are.

As I stated in a previous post, maybe the parents could get involved and rotate responsobility for opening and closing.

Most of the posts in this thread have already touched upon what I think is the main priority for Russell to succeed next year, the offseason workout program. Judging from what we've witnessed on the field, this is where Ashland and even Raceland seem to have passed them by over the last couple of years. Russell has enough skilled players to field a competitive team next year. The question is will they be competitive with Ashland, Ironton, Mason County, Raceland, and top class 3A playoff teams?

Everyone goes on and on about how Ashland is suddenly fielding class after class of athletes that are quicker and more explosive than Russell and I simply refuse to believe they just had the fortunate genetic pool during these years. After all, Ashland's senior class, which destroyed Russell on the football field this year, lost to Russell 4 years ago in the Kiwanis Bowl. Something drastically changed in those 4 years.

You can call me crazy if you wish (and I know FBall will :biggrinSmile, but I would be willing to bet Ashland has included the Vertimax sport specific training program in their regimen. It promises faster 40 times, better vertical leaps, and a quicker first step (http://www.dailyindependent.com/localspo...ory)...the very things we have witnessed Ashland utterly dominate Russell with over the past 2 years! Also, David Apts, the owner of the facility that houses this equipment, is listed as the official Ashland football team physical therapist. There is a reason Ashland is suddenly becoming the dominant team in our area and it's not just a "down cycle" of talent at Russell.

I'm not saying Russell needs to go out and purchase Vertimax machines or even Fitness World memberships for their players, but it is becoming clear something needs to be done if they want to continue having fun and exciting games with packed houses against the best of the local area teams and if they want to be playing football right now instead of watching Raceland play.

If Russell can come up with about 20 or so guys per year (that's about how many I figure they need to be truly competitive because they are always going to need numerous guys to play both offense, defense, and special teams) who dedicate themselves to becoming better athletes on a year round basis using whatever training resources are available to them (lifting at the field house, running the track, running the stairs, using the equipment at Fitness World or the Y, doing the Vertimax, doing P90X, eating right, and/or taking supplements), then we will likely see a potentially great Russell team next year. If not (or if only a handful are dedicated to it as it appears has been the case the past couple of years), then we will continue to see average Russell teams because their top-notch coaching staff, the system they implement, and the execution they demand will continue to be worth a few wins a year over the "also ran" teams. For them to consistently be a dominant team, though, they need to have a top-notch offseason training program.

I realize it's ultimately up to a few players to come together and decide this is something they want to do and commit to, but surely some sort of standards could be enforced by the staff??? I would think Russell could find some motivated players. They're not that far removed from getting to see and experience what a state title is like for the school and community. Is it really that much more motivational for the Ashland players to come out every season in better shape than Russell knowing their season is going to end in round 1 or 2 of the playoffs to Highlands no matter what they do??? Is it more motivational for Raceland players to come out in better shape than Russell knowing they've never even won a regional championship or sniffed a state title game??? Please.

As for the shabby field house facilities at Russell, I've never understood why we don't have the "Billy Ray Cyrus Field House" sitting behind the scoreboard stocked with state-of-the-art equipment. Between himself and Hannah Montana, this guy should have enough money in his petty cash drawer to build something like this and give something back to his alma mater.

That's all I have to say about the Russell 2010 football team. They've got some potentially great players like Davidson, Spradlin, Korzep, Dehoff, Cooper, etc. We'll see what they do.

A family membership at the Y is only 35.00 per month for a year. I think they have student plans for either 20 or 25 a month.

Good luck to Russell in 2010.

But GC breaks the losing streak.

Flybynight and oldwarrior you are out numbered on here there are probably 3 times the Russell fans who post here against your maybe 5 or 10 fans max.

So again that wasn't a very smart move to come talking smack ina Russell football thread for the 2010 season.

So your saying that you can come into a Greenup thread and talk smack, but we can't come into this one and do the same?

No you can't it was a greenup fan that started the smack talk about beating Russell by 21 there on the greenup 2010 season anyway go back and read the thread. unless the greenup fans/whoever else comes to greenups defense lay off russell it won't stop that's for sure.

I was looking at The russell male enrollment from 04-05,05-06 school years and comparing it to last school year and our male enrollment has really took a drop from an average of around 350 for 2 years and now for last year our male enrollment was 318. It looks like if Russell male enrollment doesn't pick up for this school year and next school year we could very well be back in 2a again come 2011.

Some GC fans are ridiculous! These are the same people who was saying GC was gonna have a great season this year and beat Rowan/Lawrence county. And ended up winning 2 games. How can a team have so many arrogant fans when the team hasn't had a winning season in forever!

Are all these 2010 threads just gonna be people from other teams coming in and talking smack? That's dumb its almost a year away!

This thread is about what Russell needs to be doing in the offseason to better prepare themselves for next season. And that is getting in the weightroom! I would think some of the local gyms in the flatwoods area would be willing to help out the Devils. I'm sure if some boosters or someone approached them they could help out. Russell players used to live in the weight room. They need to get back to doing that to be more competitive. If they don't get stronger the playbook needs to be adjusted. You can't expect one kid to carry the ball 40 times a game when the other team is stronger than you upfront! It's just not possible.

Yes it is when the topic is greenup football 2010 it is not about how much they're going to beat or lose by.It is about what they can do to improve for next season. As you can see other teams fans agree with me about gc fans.

Keep it on topic if you want to talk Russell vs Greenup 2010 i'll be glad to hash it out all night long in its own thread but keep this one and the greenup one on topic.

I doubt Russell is going to lose to Greenup
#57
They are starting in the weight room the Monday following Thanksgiving break.

I agree with many of the things that have been said on here. One of the biggest changes over the last 2 years is how our Off and Def lines have gotten so much smaller. Weight lifting and cardio. is very important, but if you do not have size to go with it (esp of the line) it puts you at a disadvantage. You can be 6'1" or 6'2" but if your max body weight is 180 - 190 lbs, no matter how strong you get in the weight room, you shouldn't be having to put those boys on the Off and Def Lines to go against the Ironton's Ashlands and Mason and from my observation that is what we've had to do the last couple of years. Now from what I've read, we have some Freshman and sophomore lineman that seem to have some size and potential. If I was the coach in charge of the offen. linemen, I would be making sure those gentlemen made it to the weight room and track on a regular basis this offseason.

Now onto my second thought. According to a source close to the program (former player living in my house-lol) off season weightlifting and conditioning was never made mandatory until around March, and then even if you didn't come during that time, he told me the coaches never followed through with any punishments. IMO, If you are going to make something 'mandatory' then you also need to attach some consequences if not followed.

One last thought for now. I do not know if they do this now, but I would separate my lifting and conditioning into positional categories and make those coaches responsible for that group on certain days. For example, take your (QB, RB, WR, TE and possibly DB) and do specific weight training for them 2 days a week and then 1 day a week of cardio. Then take your (Off Line, Def Line, DE and LB) and do specific weight training for them as well. Then if you had enough position coaches that were willing to come, you could even break out those combinations into individal drills just for that position.

Just some thoughts from a father turned fan.
