BlackcatAlum Wrote:This doesn't really surprise me. I knew after Bell handed it to Whitley that Whitley wasn't as good as we thought they may be. I don't know if they have some injuries or what, but I knew Belfry would win this one.

Congrats Pirates!

Still no credit? Instead of how improved or "good" Belfry is, this has turned into a "How bad whitley co is"...

I'm going to make a prediction on here that I made to my wife 2 weeks ago... Belfry goes undefeated the rest of the regular season!!!

Belfry continues to get better every game, Thomas Varney is a game changer. Im looking for some BIG noise from the Pirates come playoff time if they keep it up! Nice win Pirates, well deserved.TongueirateSho

First of all, my hats off to the Pirates as they absolutely dominated a 5A school on the road, and it was their 2nd 5A opponent win in a row. This was Belfry's statement game! This is one dangerous team, if we can shore up our defense and stop the silly little penalties, this team may find themselves in Bowling Green! I picked Belfry to win, but I am shocked by the final score.

BP now that you mention it... the penalty phase of this game was UH.. Just that... Whitley had a total of 2 penalties for 10 yards and Belfry had 2 separate 15 yarders and a couple of offsides that I know of. OH... the illegal procedure... Forgot that one.. HAHA....

One the first Whitley possession when they scored there were at least 2 "block in the back" with one being directly in front of the line judge with not one flag thrown. This comes back to referees doing their jobs. Teach these young men what they are doing wrong!!! I hate this kind of stuff even though I can't do a darn thing about it!! HAHA...

Congrats Pirates on a GREAT win!!!

sure hate it that i had to miss the game. congrats to thomas and the whole pirate team. great game. keep up the hard work and stay focused.

Just wow. This team looks like a totally different team from that night in Prestonsburg. I never would have thought Belfry would do this well this year. I would say Belfry is a solid contender to make it back to the state finals this year no doubt.

Belfry0304 Wrote:Heard he broke one of Doug Howard's records in the game?
and also heard Mr. Rich Brooks requested Thomas' address?

I don't know about the Brooks deal, but I do know that 47 points in a game, 317 yards rushing, (unofficially) but close, and 7 TDs, should all be school records. Also, counting a 95 yard kickoff return, 412 yards of all-purpose yardage could be a school record as well. Simply put, possibly the best individual performance in BHS history.

As for the team. After the first 3 Whitley drives, the defense really played well. Going with a big defensive front helped change the complexion of the game. One point that has not been emphasized enough, is that Gary Runyon, sophomore defensive captain at middle linebacker, did not dress. He did, however, help coach the two freshman linebackers, Mullins and Gormley. This duo is believed to have been the first pair of freshman linebaackers too start in school history.

Offensively, Belfry was almost flawless. Whitley stopped Belfry 1 time. Belfry had a fumble. The decision to come out of the locker room at half in the "Thomcat" was coaching at its best. Whitley has a fantastic offensive unit, but their defense was terrible. Their running attack is impressive, but they got away from their gameplan because they could not keep up with the Pirates. At the 10:50 mark of the second quarter, Belfry had run one offensive play, and the score was 14-14. Belfry ran 11 plays in the first half and led 21-20 at the break.

Congrats Belfry, great game.

From the 2nd half of the Ashland game, this team has began to click. I've been to all 5 games so far, and typical of a Haywood coached team, they have improved every week. The offensive line looked better than they have all year. With Whitley's big defensive front and them playing 11 men in the box, the game that Varney had was truly a testament to what kind of athlete he is.

I made the trip and it was worth every mile of it.
The line bloked very well tonight and thomas ran
unreal every one played good it was a good win
for Pirates.

Congrats to Belfry
Can Whitley get it turned around
They are in a very competitive district

uh... Is his saying "I knew Belfry would win this one" considered "no credit" ?!? Frankly, I think he showed more faith in Belfry's team than what some of the Pirate faithful have espoused (before/after previous games). Confusedhh:

I'll agree with BlackcatAlum - the only mild surprise in this Belfry win is the margin. Congrats to the Pirate team - you're showing some of your more spoiled fans you're not "down" and ARE a challenger for the 3A Title.

Great win, Pirates !!! And please... No more talk of a "rebuilding" year in Pond Creek, OK ??

I read alot about Thomas, but what about the O LINE? I was at the game and they did a great job at getting the initial push. I'm not taking anything away from Thomas because he is one of the best if not the best back in the state but the line opened the holes and Thomas hit them! Great job by all the Pirates!

Yep, Thomas' mother went around to each one of the lineman after the game and thanked them for blocking so good. The line dominated the game, and when they didn't open big holes, Thomas just outran them. Also, Chase Maynard had right at 90 yards on 10 carries. This is his best outing since being out for the Ashland game.

Belfry back on track.
Can Whitley recover after back to back beat downs?
At the very least appears Whitley was overrated and lost more than many thought from last year,

TongueirateShoGuys,First off as most of you on here know Thomas Varney is my son. While he is having a great year ,and for that I am proud, His mom and I would like to be the first in the crowd to say that our lines on both sides of the ball have done absolutely outstanding this year. Each and every boy on that field has grown up alot in the last few games and proven they are men.To the O-line, I would also like to Thank You guys for the extra hard work and dedication you all have shown. Without you guys Thomas could not do what he does and he knows that better than anybody.Congrats to all the Pirates on a hard fought win and keep up the hard work. All you guys have more heart than any team I have ever been around and you guys are truly a special team. Looks like the muffins are gonna be there Monday Garrett. LOL Go Pirates!!!

:please:

What are you talking about. Just as oneijoe said, I've said better things about Belfry than some Belfry fans have thus far this season. And isn't saying that "I knew Belfry would win this one" giving Belfry any credit?

Come on.

Just seems like you guys are taking away from the Win when you come on here and say things like "I could tell Whitley was overrated when Bell smacked them last week" (like Belfry didn't really accomplish much by smacking a 5A team because they were not that good anyway) when all I heard last week is how big and physical Whitley is... Just trying to get some credit given where credit is due. Maybe I just took your post the wrong way?

Well I can understand what your saying. But we (Prestonsburg) wasn't shown that much credit early because we had to hear about how teams where rebuilding, etc. I don't mean to take anything away from Belfry's win because I'm a Belfry fan myself outside of Pburg.

Right on! I understand what you mean.

Well I was crucified when I made the statement on thr radio that the close loss to Ashland was the turning point of the season for Belfry. This Belfry team has really responded each and every week by improving during the grueling first half schedule. I see two opponents in the second half that could cause problems Sheldon Clark and Johnson Central. Well here is my next prediction. If this team stays healthy, continues to work hard, I am predicting that Belfry runs the table the rest of the season heading into Bowling Green.
#57
I too think that was the turning point.
#58
Let me start off by saying congrats Belfry on the good win. The Varney kid is a heck of a player. He made us look silly all night. You guys are gonna go far.

Now, to Whitley, MISTAKES, TURNOVERS, and MISTAKES killed us. Whitley needs to go back to fundamentals this week and work on tackling. It was horrible Friday night. Second of all, i dont think Whitley was prepared for that offense. Whitley had trouble reading the fakes all night and it showed by allowing big runs. And last, i know you have to work with what you got, but, if Whitley is going to be a contender year in and year out and keep this thing going they have got to eliminate playing 7 or 8 players both ways for most of the game, it is there achilles heel and we they wear down way to early.

Hopefully Whitley can turn this thing around next week and get back on the district winning path and head into the post season with some confidence.

Excellent post! This is exactly what I said in another thread about Thomas. He is a great kid who gives the credit to the team and not on himself. He is instrumental in a LOT of ways on the field but his team mates are always..... ALWAYS right beside him and he knows it!!! Again, I loved your post!!!

BTW, this is off topic but I was told to tell you that a fishin pole is on it's way!!! HAHAHA.....

Absolutely amazing performance by Thomas Varney. Hopefully this will attract some college attention. Great job too by the O-line for opening the holes for him.
