Whats with the little attitude about "footnotes"? Belfry played without their second leading rusher who is still part of the team and will be an integral part of their development the remainder of the year and Ashland played without last year's leading rusher who will not be part of their team for the remainder of the year. Ashland won fair and square, i really hope they can make some tremendous noise come playoff time. They have all the pieces in place for a great year. The good news for Belfry fans is that they were without Maynard last night and still almost pulled off the upset. A good loss if Ive ever witnessed one.

Good win for the Tomcats. It's always had to beat Belfy at Belfry. Congrats!

Looks like this was a great game, as expected

It would seem that the Varney kid is shouldering much of the load this season, but i think that's just the way it appears. At my last count the quarterback for Belfry is 3/4 passing for over 100 yrds. But for some reason the coaching staff don't like to pass very much. To me he's showed that he is more than capable of throwing the ball, I think they need to mix it up a little more than what they have been doing. And the running back that they played in the Ashland game... #5 I think. Where has this kid been? I was impressed. I hope he reads this forum because he is going to be a factor if he gets more playing time. So i think that the reason Varney is carrying much of the load is that the offense is designed that way (always has been). He is a great athlete but there are others on the team very much able to help him out. I also saw the O line improve alot in this game. Belfry is one or two mistakes per game from being a Great football team. Keep working hard Pirates and look out playoffs. Your shedule is tough, to make you tough.

Yeah #5 that's Demartino, he is a tough kid. Belfry will be fine they seem to just have trouble with Ashland, They will only get better from here seems like they should maybe get some of the load of varney though.

Kinda sounds like excuses to me. Btw.. no such thing as a good loss, it is what it is. I do think belfry will get better an should make some noise come playoffs! Good luck the rest of the way!

I was talking about #5 for Belfry... thought his last name was runyon.

If you're counting, I think he has more fumbles than pass completions.
Maybe that's where a lack of confidence from the coaching staff comes from. Just a thought.

And if it sounds like excuses, we're talking about a senior back who is quicker (not faster) than Thomas.
09-06-2009, 02:05 PM
Williams is getting better every game. He even kept the ball a couple of times Friday night and he has the athletic ability to be a decent runner at quarterback. Runyon really stepped up offensively and he will become more involved in the offense. He gives Belfry the size in the backfied that they have been missing. I didn't get in to the thread about Varney versus Fugate but those threads are kind of crazy anyway. Thomas may not have the size Fugate has, but that is the only think that separates Thomas from Fugate. Thomas never takes a play off. He was not off the field one time on Friday night. He is truly a throwback player with his running and kicking and ability to play defense. It has not been emphasized on here enough about Belfry playing without Maynard Friday. Ashland focused solely on Varney and still could not stop him. Over 215 yards and one of the best catches i have seen in a long time. When Fugate and Varney went head to head last year, Thomas held his own. Fugate had a few more yards, but not much in the second half. Thomas had 189 on 29 carries and kept Belfry in the ballgame. Thomas has one huge advdantage over Fugate and that is being in shape all season long. Thomas is one of the few players I have ever seen who is as good in the last minute of the game as he is in the first minute.

All I have heard on here is "Ifs an buts" "couldve if" from most of the belfry fans! We lost our leading rusher from last season after the first game. You didn't hear me complaining or anyone else that I know of, Thats what depth does for you which Ashland plenty of.

All i've heard is that if you had your star running back from last season the game wouldn't be close... I'm not making excuses, all I'm saying is that the game I watched last friday night was between 2 evenly matched teams. Congrats Ashland on the win. But when I listen to the radio and hear announcers say that "2 weeks ago Belfry got smashed by Pburg" (93.1 FM) it kinda makes me upset... Since when is being beat by 7 points "getting smashed"? I'm not taking anything away from Ashland or Pburg. Both have outstanding programs this year. At the same time Belfry is one or 2 mistakes from being a great team. Correct the little mistakes and Belfry will be hard to deal with.

Gee...we must be reading 2 entirely different things on here...I don't think ANY Belfry fan on here is complaining, someone just made a statement that one of our other backs did not play this game...And yes, had Chase been healthy and played, the outcome of this game could have very well have been different...

i do not understand when people say if so and so would have played the game would have been different if carter would have played he might have fumbled three times who knows injuries and lost players are a part of football so i think this is pointless topics really cause we will never know what would have happened

Aint it a **** shame when one loudmouth, ignorant fan ruins your perception of a entire bunch of classy fans. I feel sorry for all of the classy, football knowledgable Ashland fans that have to associate anyone like this into their fanbase. BTW, its easy to ignore, just got to UserCP and add that profile to the ignore list. I just found that option and its quite the blessing. Im just heartbroken that poor ol Belfry will never find a team "someday" that can ever beat Ashland. Oh, i believe Belfry has had plenty of teams in the past to do that, some got the opportunity and found that miracle "someday" while others never got the chance..................the reason is obvious.

Wish i could have seen this one. From all reports Thomas Varney was a man posessed but Belfry just spotted Ashland too many points from the get-go to overcome. This Pirates team continues to improve with each game by leaps and bounds. The key now is to STAY HEALTHY through the next 3 or 4 weeks. Whitley County, LCC, and the rivalry with Pikeville are all coming up so it is important that Belfry gets through this stretch healthy so they can focus on the district schedule at hand.

hats off to both teams for making this a great game to watch...congrats tomcats

You are definitely correct, EKU. Hopefully Maynard will be back this week. Also the development of Gary Runyon at fullback is a big asset.

Dude, you are the epitome of why the rest of this site and the state of KENTUCKY cannot stand Ashland. Yep you won the game, but I would rather lose with class than be a sore winner like you are.

Footnote: The poster you took offense to was doing exactly what we hope people would do on here after a game. RECAP IT TO THE BEST OF THEIR KNOWLEDGE AND GIVE EVRY DETAIL POSSIBLE.
I don't remember seeing a single poster mention Maynard was going to miss the game prior to kickoff, nor had I seena single fan blame this loss on not having him. I am sure that had DeMartino missed the game any Ashland fan who was unable to attend would have loved to known that he didn't play ad why, would you agree?
As for Carter, from what I heard from all of the Ashland fans his departure was actually a positive for this team. You can't make excuses why it helps your team one week and then make excuses why it hurt your team the very next.
I would strongly suggest instead of being critical of the poster and trying to stir the pot in a negative manner, it would really help improve everyone's view of you and your community if you took a few notes. Ashland is a first rate program, but the message of several posts of yours on this thread could easily tarnish that image for people trying to learn more about the Tomcats.
