I will partially agree with you.
Do I think it was wrong of Pikeville's coach to leave his starters in most of the game? From the worn-out "respect" angle, no. I don't think it is any kind of respect to the other team to pull your starters and have your subs beating their starters. In effect, saying "We're so good, our bench guys are better than your first-string." How is that respect?
But from the angle of whether it was very smart to leave them in, absolutely not. Pikeville's coach would've looked like the biggest idiot around if an important starter had suffered a season-ending injury by staying in the game during garbage time. If I was the coach, you better believe I would have my main guys drinking Gatorade on the sideline the rest of the game once it got out of hand. Not because of some ridiculous sign of "respect", but because I want them healthy for the next week and beyond.
Bottom line, I don't have a problem with leaving them in, but I don't think it was very wise.

Did Tyler Baker get banged up in the contest?
I thougth I heard the radio say so. If so at what point of the game did he get hurt? I do hope he is alright. He is a very good player that could help Pikeville if he got the touches.

What about Copley calling the timeout with about 17 seconds left? Was that for experience for the younger kids or just to score 70?

keep your heads up BL an like someone said in a earlier post the way SF played tonight you all may get a win next week.

Pikeville played much better this week, with bigtime fewer mistakes, IMO, 3rd game in the books and the O playbook is pretty limited, as I have said in the past, this stuff works fine against some , but If your gonna make noise come playoff, Several players are gonna have to touch the ball, but It dont look likely!! good luck next week, go panthers

Agreed. Pikeville is just fine in 1A, it's teams like Betsy Layne that need to go DOWN a class.
Possibly a sub-1A class or something.
There are some teams that cannot, do not, and probably will never compete (no matter what class you're in) and it doesn't make sense to say that Pikeville, who is middle of the road as far as Class 1A teams go, shouldn't be in Class 1A just because another team they played is really bad.
That argument just doesn't make sense. You've got like 400 kids in the high school and you're saying they should move UP a class?

Another thing I hate is when people get on here and complain, "oh they ran the score up, boo hoo hoo!"
Get over it people. This is high school football, it is not little league where everyone gets to play and everyone will get a "hustle" trophy at the end of the year. If you have a problem with getting beat that bad then maybe you should man up and start playing better or work harder for next year, that way you won't be put in a position where a team can rack up as many points as they like.

Stop being a baby. Coaches can talk to players about coming to school's nothing is wrong with that. And Copley told the starters on MONDAY that they were going to play through at least the frist 3 quaters, no matter what. And by the start of the 4th their was a new D-line in, 2 new LB's, and a whole new secondary. The starting offense was only on the field once in the 4th, and the one time they were on the field, they scored in one play. The players knew they would be playing untill the end of the 3rd quater no matter if they were up by 50 or down by 50, so it wasnt a descion made by Copley just to be a mean guy. It was completley justified considering Pikeville probaly only ran 20-25 plays all night, they scored almost everytime they touched the ball. So they had to stay in to at least get a decent practice in.
09-13-2008, 02:18 PM
that would be something you would say maroon. Pikeville has nothing to prove to beat Betsy Layne by so many. Sure B.L. should have played better, but they didnt. There is no reason why pikeville players should be in the 4th quarter. And your talking about new players were in, they werent to the end. The defense was the starters until 3:45 in the game and he subbed a couple of DLineman. But its alright, you got yours coming next week with lexington catholic.
And about the grade school players, doesnt pikeville have a grade school, are they not happy with the kids they have????? I know for a fact that pikeville middle wouldnt play the bobcats......

Turn them in for recruiting. Coaches (paid or unpaid) are not allowed to approach anyone like that.

Class act Pikeville calling timouts in the final minute to get another chance to score woo! I bet you feel proud about beating BL like that. I think there might be a few suspended for fighting but hopefully Korey Jarrel will get to play next week seeing how how he didnt do anything after the pikeville player ripped his helmet off after the play was over. All i can say is BL will work hard this week cuz friday agianst South Floyd will be a big gime for them.

I wasn't at the game but if Copley did call a timeout with 17 seconds to go in the game I'd say it was to either sub kids that weren't in or there weren't enough players on the field...not to run the score up more. I've known him a long time and he is a good guy and given time he will do big things for Pikeville.

THIS MAY BE THE MOST BELLYACHING THREAD I HAVE EVER SEEN...PIKEVILLE, I AGREE THAT A TEAM SHOULD BE MORE COMPETITIVE AND YES THEY SHOULD WORK TO GET BETTER, BUT SO SHOULD YOUR TEAM...STARTERS IN THAT LATE DOES NOTHING TO HELP YOU AND DON'T GIVE ME NO BS ABOUT GETTING PREPARED FOR THE PLAYOFFS...PLAYING YOUR YOUNGER GUYS FOR AT LEAST A HALF NOT ONLY BUILDS DEPTH FOR THIS YEAR'S TEAM, BUT HELPS MAINTAIN THE CONTINUITY OF THE PROGRAM FOR NEXT YEAR AND AFTER...IF THOSE KIDS GET A BUNCH OF REPS IN A VARSITY GAME, THEN NEXT YEAR THEY ARE SO MUCH FARTHER ALONG...BELFRY HAD THEIR FRESHMAN QB IN WITH ABOUT 3 OR 4 MINUTES TO GO IN THE FIRST HALF AGAINST EAST RIDGE, AND HE TOOK ALL THE SNAPS IN THE SECOND HALF...BELFRY PLAYED THEIR JV AND FRESHMAN THE WHOLE LAST HALF WITH A RUNNING CLOCK...BELFRY USED 16, YES, 16 DIFFERENT BALLCARRIERS AND ALL 59 OR 60 PLAYERS THAT DRESSED PLAYED...
BETSY LAYNE, YOU MUST GET BETTER AND PROVIDE BETTER COMPETITION...GOOD LUCK TO BOTH TEAMS NEXT WEEK AND HOPEFULLY THE SPORTSMANSHIP WILL BE IMPROVED...

Btw, I Love Daniel Harmon...always Have And Always Will...he Really Deserves To Be On A Better Team. But 6 Tds Is Crazy...belfry Has One Back With 20 Carries Total In 3 Games...inflated Scoring Stats Against Inferior Competition Will Not Help His Chance For All-state...and Don't Take This As A Knock On Anyone, Because It Isn't...it's Just That Younger Guys Need To Get Reps And They Can Score Some Of Those Tds...next Year Harmon Is Not Gonna Be Around And Someone Needs To Be Ready To Fill In...also, Leave Copley Alone And Let Him Rebuild Pikeville...they Need To Get Back To At Least Being As Good As The 99 And 00 Teams...harmon Needs Some Of Those Tds Against Lex. Cath, Belfry, And In The Playoffs...good Luck To The Panthers From One Of The Few People Around That Can Actually Pull For Both Belfry And Pikeville, Ha Ha.

Guys, I don't think leaving the starters in was an effort to run up the score.
It was probably an effort to get Harmon some better stats.

Congrats Pikeville on the district win.

I wasn't at the game, nor did I listen to it. I don't know any of the coaches for either team, and I only know one player (he plays for Pikeville).
At Pikeville College's game yesterday, I overheard some of Pikeville's players saying how the coach "wanted to score 90" and how he "better not win any kind of sportsmanship award." Like I said, I'm not biased for anyone, nor do I have a reason to be, but if what those kids said he said were true, it's ridiculous.

Which would be very Bush League by Copley if true... this whole thread is garbage IMO.
There was no reason why Pikeville should have had their starters in the 4th Quarter, NONE WHATSOEVER, if they were trying to get them more varsity snaps to work on things it makes no sense because I guarantee Piekville's practice squad defense is probably more competitive than BL. If it was to pad stats that is completely sad, compare those stats to a RB at Belfry, JC, or Bell County and it is a disservice to individuals who are just as deserving. If it was to make a highlight film for a certain player's recruitment then the coaching staff is giving college recruiters no credit for being able to analyze film and how competitive the team being played is in those films. There is no way to justify what Pikeville did.
As for BL! Whatever sympathy I had for them following this game was quickly erased with the comments about recruiting and the remarks about Pikeville belonging in 2A. The sad reality that BL fans must accept is that they are NOT a competitive 1A team. I truly feel the new head coach is going to bring them to a much more respectable level, but at this point in time BL should not be competing in district play. Does their lack of competitiveness warrant having Pikeville "Pad Stats against them? NO! But, the sad reality is that when you are probably 50-60 points below the level of other teams in 1A you have to expect to see some nasty scores along the way, and be at the mercy of teams who will "run up the score"

Pikeville had a freshmen game the night before against Johnson Central, which they lost in 2 overtimes. So, the Freshmen and JV are getting plenty of reps. Their Varsity needs to treat games like this as a practice and work on things that they need to improve on for future games. At a 1A school you don't always get the team reps you need in practice. Besides I was at the game, and they played alot of Freshmen and JV the whole game, they just performed like varsity kids.

I don't buy this, as I said Pikeville would get better practice against their Freshman and Sophomores Monday through Thursday.
Maybe I am wrong, but when I think of the Pikeville program the first thign that comes to mind is "CLASS". Nothing about Friday holds up that reputation to me.
