Been 2 days now. Should be evident.

Who’s the candidates that have applied or reciprocated interest?

Isn't Hicks "old school" like Kevin Spurlock was? I can't imagine Floyd Central wanting that style of coaching back.

Will Brandon Gearheart be applying for this job? He does teach there and I think he wants to get back into coaching.

Yes already applied for it. Gearheart could be what they need with his style of play.

He led the program to back-to-back 58th District championships in 2015 and 2016 this was during his time as Prestonsburg ladycats coach and he coached Prestonsburgs boys team.He also  coached middle school girls’ basketball at John M. Stumbo and served as an assistant coach with the June Buchanan boys’ team under Wes Smith. In 2019 he took over June Buchanan School boys’ basketball program.

He also took a team of misfits at Prestonsburg (boys) in 2017 to the regional tournament and was a made 3 away from upsetting eventual regional champions JC. He plays a fun style of ball that translates well with a team that doesn’t necessarily have a ton of top-tier talent.

Brandon Gearheart is a great guy with a good heart.

But, let’s not get carried away. In 2015-16, Prestonsburg girls were 9-23 and the rest of the district was 20-50.

In 2014-2015, Prestonsburg was 16-14 and the rest of the district was 27-51 (all amongst the 5-7 worst records in the region)

In 2013-2014, Prestonsburg was 8-22.

The girls that won the back to back districts also ran through the county for a few years in middle school at Allen.

That 3 year stretch was the worst stretch for 58th district girls basketball in the past 25 years. In those 3 years, there was only 2 instances that a 58th district team had a winning record. (Prestonsburg was 33-59 in Gearheart’s tenure)

I think Brandon Gearheart would do a good job although if the players would buy in.

Who is the front runner for this job? Has administration talked to players and families for their input?

I have heard Huff is out and even if he wasn't why would you want a coach who has moved around that much and never really won anything? Heck Jenkins coach would obviously be better send the board to talk to him. Whens the last time Jenkins won a district title?
#40
Long shot but Douglas Hopkins any interest?

If the powers that be at Floyd Central/board want someone there who is already familiar with the kids and has head coaching experience at the high school level, Brandon Gearheart has been teaching there for a number of years. I would think he would stay at Floyd Central as long as they'd have him, unlike Huff, who seems to move around often.

I am guessing the rumors about Betsy Layne moving on from Howard was just that. If Floyd County really wanted to have some great basketball, they'd hire Gearheart at Floyd Central and get Mason Hall in at Prestonsburg or Betsy Layne. If Matt Taylor leaves Shelby Valley, they'd be wise to reach out to either of those two.

I think right now Howard should be safe unless something happens to change that. Now Mason hall I know could help change any bad situation given the chance. The 15th region got some good coaches out there they just need to get their foot in the door like a larry mullins, or given a program like a mason hall.

Heard Betsy lanes girls coach has put his name in for this job

Honestly forgot all about Kory Thacker I remember talking to him a few years back when he coach middle school at BL and he said he would love to take on a boys high school job in this area. Could be a good opportunity for him

Applied for the job is, Robbie Joe Johnson, Brandon Gearheart, Mason Hall, Kory Thacker, Larry Mullins, Derrick Newsome and Huff is 50/50 I’ve heard.

It would hurt to see him leave Betsy Layne, but you are not finding a better leader and person than Kory Thacker. Would be a GREAT hire for the Jags if this was the case.

Larry mullins, mason Hall, Robbie Johnson, Clint shutts, and few more  coaches some high school basketball experience that might be worth a look at . Kory was assistant at prestonsburg and then middle school. I know all these guys have coaches some at the high school level at least freshmen team or jv rather some know it or not. Kory done some good things at Betsy Layne but Triplet  and Moore also coached girls basketball and was successful during there time at South Floyd and Fc. Once they transferred to boys they didn’t do as well.

None of the names mentioned are the frontrunner for the Job.

without disclosing too much information, looking like it could be a coach who was recently let go by his administration. He would be bringing a Knuckle Sandwich with him.

You think they might bring back Kevin spurlock

Out of the applicants they would be stupid not to hire Derrick Newsome. Which they are pretty stupid the entire county is so it wouldnt shock me if they hired Huff instead for him to underachieve again and leave again.

Derrick was a fantastic coach at BL

so he’s applying for every job coming and going promising to bring kids with him to each school he applies to?

Did we forget the erratic behavior that caused him to be let go at BL?

Half the team quit in the last season. Verbal abuse. Objects thrown. Among other not so good things I shall not mention. FC’s Principal was there during it all.

False. Kory is happy doing his thing with the BL girls program.

Clint Shutts? Didn't they run him off from Adams Middle School a couple of years ago.

I see what you did there.

Eric Ratliff and bringing Jamere Knuckles for the football team.

Done a good job at PCC, but have to wonder why he was let go after doing such a good job, and would he stay only a year or 2 then leave when the talent is gone, just like he did at PCC?

Cause then you’d be back in the same boat you’re in now, looking to hire someone to take over but with even less talent.

Need someone who’ll be there for the long haul. Someone who’s invested in building a program and developing the program all the way down to the elementary schools.

i agree, but with politics involved it'll be who the higher ups WANT instead if who the KIDS need.

My thought process on this…

Huff who’s from an entirely different region, has been at 2 different schools in the last 4 years. What’s gonna happen if Harlan County comes open and he goes back home? Would be hard to pass on that job if you’re him, especially at such a big school. What’s gonna happen if a top 14th region school comes open? Casey Huff is gonna go where he has a chance to win a state title, so he’s gonna always look to take that next step.

Ratliff, who’s from Pike County, who some thought would get SV job when Taylor got it. You don’t think he would take the Pikeville, SV job if they came open? Because every year we hear Elisha is gone and Taylor shopping his name around. Ratliff also used to coach football, who’s to say he don’t take a football job elsewhere?

You really think these guys are “genuinely invested” in building a program for the next 5-10 years in Floyd County?

Floyd County basketball was good when they took the top resident coaches in Floyd County and gave them a chance. Henry Webb, Johnny Martin, Junior Newsome, etc. That’s the last time FC schools won region/region all a’s and had atleast a chance to win region every year.

In my opinion, you give shots to Floyd County Applicants. Those are the ones who would be invested and wouldn’t jump ship after a year or 2.
