The pension bill and sports
#31
The Fletcher, Patton, Beshears Administrations did not match as by law, what the teachers put into their retirements. Beshears also borrowed from it and didn't pay it back. That is illegal. Bevin was handed this mess and he is trying to fix it. He doesn't need to insult the teachers by calling them names.

The state needs to raise revenue. There are some ways to do this.

1. State of Kentucky gives out 13 billion a year in tax breaks to corporations and special interest groups. Cut out the breaks for special interest groups and this would be about 4 billion a year. Put half in Teachers retirement and half in general fund. Teachers retirement would have 0% unfunded liability in 5 years. Legislature doesn't want to do this because they get their pockets lined by the special interests.

2. Casino Gambling. Kentucky loses hundreds of millions of dollars a year to Indiana and Illinois from residents who go to riverboats and spend their money. There is already gambling in the state, disguised as bingo halls. They get to have their parlors by claiming to be a non-profit.

3. Raise taxes on cigarettes. Kentucky is one of the leading states in the country in producing tobacco. This would generate millions.

The fact is the pension system works when it funded. What happened over the years was both republicans and democrats used they money that was supposed to go to pensions to pay other bills that they didn’t want to hurt their interest. Why do houseboat owners pay less in taxes than a fishing boat? Why did we just give 60 million to banks with no guarantee of return? Why do they continue to give out 13 billion more in tax breaks than they can afford? Why haven’t they helped the Martin County water situation? Do you realize the federal government just this year is giving a tax break to what was supposed to be a college fund but now can be used for private school tuition? The words “tax scholarship” will be used on Monday to describe charter school finances. Where you think all this money is coming from?

This person gets it.

The thing is this is just the start. This isn’t about just pensions. It’s about how things work in this state. Education has been cut about 2 billion dollars over the last 10 years. All we know how to do in this state is cut services. We’d rather cut services than expand. We’d rather social workers have double case loads than make companies pay their share. In some counties the school system is the biggest employer. Why would you want this group to hurt? I hate to tell you but rural Kentucky can’t take much more.

Thanks, Johnny. You get the whole shebang, as well.

johnnyd Wrote:The fund has been raided by BOTH republicans and democrats over the years. Let me ask you this. They just voted in a bill that literally did nothing to solve the pension issue. 1% -6% of 40 billion and five additional years at that did nothing. They are about to vote in perminant funding for charter schools. What is the point of taking new teacher stability away?

By both parties?
I think you're forgetting who controlled this state for the past 50 years straight

I can agree with doing all of those things.
However I wouldn't give it all to the education sector when our infanstructure is failing.

So what's the chances little Beshear gets daddy arrested for stealing?
Seems that won't happen

RunItUpTheGut Wrote:That seems absurd. Surely there's more to this.

Its a fact. I can name multiple people on my shift with 13 less years than me that make more. You can do a salary search on opendoorky. The ones under a year and half in do make less. But the ones that where already hired in and new at the time of the raise got 600 dollars a month raise. I got 300. They basically gave a 600 dollar raise to everyone that made under a certain amount, and the rest of us got 300. 90 percent of staff got the 600 because most people are new cause we have a big turnover rate. Very few have stuck it out. The ones that have suffered threw years barely missed the 600, but did by barely being above cutoff. So everyone behind me started getting paid almost as much. Then they turned around and got the raise you get when you complete probation, which put them ahead Of old dogs like me. Those people have almost 2 years in now to my almost 15. I wrote Bevin when it happened asking why the ones on probation are going to get paid more than me. 1 of his croneys wrote back saying that they can't give older staff something without giving it to the newer staff cause they have to give us the same raise. Its asinine for them to say they have to give us the same right after giving an extra 300 dollars to some but not to all.

The majority rules the state house the last I checked. As RIUTG has pointed out, Dems were in the majority until 2016.

"The Republican Party took over the last Democratic legislative bastion in the South on Tuesday, winning control of the Kentucky House of Representatives for the first time in nearly 100 years, and winning it in a big way."
https://www.courier-journal.com/story/ne.../93344114/

Now call me biased, but a century of Democratic control over the economic fortunes of this state pretty much ends the debate about whose responsibility it is that pensions are in trouble. Republicans were steam roller fodder until 2016, don't try and put equal blame on them.

No people don’t like being lied too. People especially don’t like being deceived through sleazy political tactics....Anyone who can claim the way SB 151 was passed, and approves, needs to reevaluate who they are as people... I mean a sewer bill, really? What a joke.

When you account the student loan difference today, I would imagine those new hires needed that extra money.

You bevin bandwagoners sure will reach for anything to try and justify his antics. What student loans would these employees be paying back? You think people that has degrees go work at a 30 thousand prison job. I work with these people the majority didnt go to college. Drive an hour and half round trip to a job like that everyday when gas prices where the way they were a few years ago at 25k, then let the state say we finally have money but are giving more to new employees and see if you take up for them. I $tarted under 20k and times where tuff, but guess a 21 year old with no family to support, and still living with mommy and daddy deserve more they have struggled so much. Funny thing is most out there are die hard repubs, and have loved bashing the ones that are dems for years, but they are awful quiet now that they are getting Screwed by there own party lol

Nope. He won’t see a day in jail. What most don’t understand about me is I hate political officiations. To fix America I believe one of the first things would be to ban political parties. Gang mentality politics is killing America.

Well democrats controlled all three from 1992 to 1997. After that republicans controlled the senate and still do today. So yes both parties are at fault.

Yes this has failed because we haven’t changed the gas tax in a billion years.

If you don’t think you are getting screwed by republicans and democrats alike you have another thing coming. You need to really check into where your tax money goes and who doesn’t pay taxes. Look into the houseboat versus fishing boat taxes. Ask the question why no casinos? Politicians will tell you that people don’t want it because it gambling but what they mean is horse tracks don’t want it and probably people who are vested already in casinos don’t want it. Politicians in this state have no idea how to raise revenue. It’s a shame that we cut education, medical care, libraries, etc so the elite can pay for their kids private school on the tax payer dollar.

I seen a picture of a girl today holding a sign along the lines of...
Bachelors 16k
Master 32k
Psych 2 years 49k
Take home pay: 32k
Teaching children: priceless

Call me crazy but that just seems like a bad career choice. 32k a year after getting a masters?

That’s take home, not gross. So your saying that they don’t get paid what their education calls for?

No.
I'm saying they're required to much education for the job.
It's time to stop the masters nonsense to teach high school kids basic algebra.

Gross or net, that still seems like an bad move. Who would get all of that education for 32k?

Most teachers get a Rank I, which is 30 hours above a Master's.

My wife is a teacher, she did her Masters and Rank 1 for less than 10K total for both.

Dont believe everything these teachers are floating out their.

Why? Why would a teacher lie about their salary or benefits?
