If you did this with all the defunct schools who played basketball, you would probably have over a 1000 easy.
Football not so much. Most schools that are no defunct because of consolidation didn't play football pre consolidation.
To my knowledge in Whitley County, no schools other than the three current schools, (Whitley, Corbin, Williamsburg) ever played football. Obviously Wburg and Corbin didn't ever come from consolidation, but Whitley was consolidated when Rockholds, Woodbine, Pleasant View (I believe it was called Boone HS), etc. all joined to form Whitley. I don't believe at any point did any of them ever field a team.
Old Jacket may be able to answer that.

Irvine High School in Estill Co. also played FB. I used to have some pix but that was 20-30 years ago.
Doesn't Gullet still have the record for TD's in a game?

If I remember correctly, he scored 72 points in a game. 11 touchdowns and 6 extra points. According to KHSAA, it is still a record.

I honestly wonder how many times records could have been broken if not for coaches sitting players out of respect for the horrible teams there blowing out?
How many times could a Highlands team playing district against a bad Grant County or Harrison County or whoever they played in district could they have put up 200 points if they wanted to?
Makes one think.

I love talking about football history in Pike County. I actually feel relevant doing it.
I'm an old Elkhorn City guy, and some of the older posters on here may remember when we were very good at football. Looking back at history, we had a very strong program until we closed our doors for good. Some years we were the best team in the county, and some years we were the worst team in the county. It would be impossible to type all the memories that I have about Cougar Football.
Some years we played the best of the best, and beat them. Not talking about just Belfry or Pikeville, but we have played teams like Henry Clay...On the road...And won. It was a blast playing at such a small winning school.
Teams in Pike County that didn't have football; Dorton, Feds Creek, Millard, and Hellier.
Mullins, Johns Creek, Belfry, Phelps, Pikeville, Elkhorn City, and Virgie were the only schools that had football.

Warrior Grandpa Wrote:To the best of my feeble memory of Letcher High, they never fielded a football team. Only played winter and spring sports, Basketball and baseball.
I covered a game at Letcher against Evarts on a Saturday afternoon. I think they started football the last year before consolidation.
As for Lone Jack, I think they had a team over the last 10 years or so before closing in 1984.
Lynch, Benham, Black Star, Wallins, Loyall, Rosenwald, Hall, Cumberland, Evarts and James A. Cawood were former teams in Harlan County.
I can't remember any high schools in Harlan County that didn't play football.

Letcher High did have a program many many years ago. Over 40 or so. The way I heard it there was a player fatality from a broken neck and they disbanded the program permanantley.

Help me find pictures HCS. The only think I've found so far was one of the Lynch Bulldogs when they won state.

Lone Jack started their program in 1977, I think. Bruce Hendrickson was their first head coach. I remember that their field sat on the east side of 25E just a few miles north of Pineville.

Would love to see some pics if anyone has any. Would also like to see Bell County prior to 84 in their old school colors

I remember playing in the old Wheelwright gym and our coach telling us not to dunk because the glass was held in the backboard with duck tape

Defunct teams? Collins is the first that comes to mind.
