Whitley County names Jason Chappell Head Coach
#31
I can not believe that GUT has not weighed in on this choice. GUT, what are your thoughts on this move?
#32
I am definitely an outsider looking in and my opinion is not worth a thing but I don't believe this is a plus for Whitley. I believe that Chappell is a great guy but is not a step up from Black as far as football goes. Just my opinion though. I just wish the best for the kids. I am all about our kids.
#33
Like I said before I thought this was supposed to be a very desirable job. Just curious as to who applied. I guess an inside hire is looking mighty fine right about now.
#34
I wish the new coach nothing but the best. I hope he is successful and he can get the colonels back on track. He has his work cut out for him but with the right help and the community backing him this could be a productive hire. With that being said I am still on board and hope 2014 is better to the colonels and their fans.

Wildcat18 Wrote:Yeah I'm not sure why there's so much support for this hire. He seems to have had a losing record everywhere he's been.

I understand what you're saying.

But, I will say this is the first school that he has coached that wasn't all about basketball. Perry Central and South Laurel have always been basketball schools.

Plus, he is the person hired for the job. Not supporting him is the worst thing any fan can do. They're all in this together, so they might as well show their support and be positive.

I think the fine folks at Whitley will be very pleased with their hire. Great role model and no one will work harder for success than Coach Chappell. Great hire, best of luck.
#37
Whitley will have to understand it will take time.
#38
Congrats and Good Luck!

I believe the Whitley fans may be in shock.

Rome wasn't built in a day. If the fans give him a chance, they will be very satisfied with the hire. If not, the downward spiral will continue. Give the man time to do his job.

I'm not in shock :Shaking:

Wow is all I can say, not much of a hire when they thought they were going big name.

One emotion to sum up the past 6 months, 50000 views, and 1500+ post.

:please:

I guess im just highly skeptical. I really thought the goal would be to go for a proven winner. I just don't see it here. He has struggled at every school hes been at.

Ill keep my judgment until after I see the season begin, but goal number one should be to go to school and recruit the hallways.

Ill also admit, this one even surprised me when I heard.

What this tells me is they didn't have much going on before last Friday. Great guy by all accounts, wish him and them the best. Can't help but wonder who finished runner up in this search...

I think its really easy to see how it unfolded.

They had there list of 3 guys they wanted.
Two said no, didn't even hear from the other, and then they were forced to settle.

Parson from Betsy Lane turned the job down,

Chappell is one of my home boys so I will be pulling for him to be successful
great guy just hope they are patient and give him time as someone posted
earlier get in the halls ,go to the middle school and get these kids out,
Coach Gibbs will be your biggest asset. good luck coach Chappell

Whats the chances he can get Frazier to follow him if Frazier doesn't get a job somewhere?
#50
If he runs the same type of offense he ran at south laurel gut will not be happy... He will spread it out and throw the crap out of it. Doesn't run it much just enough to keep teams honest..
Good luck to him and Whitley this and the years to come.

I don't care if the guy runs a fake punt on every single play as long as it wins ball games.

who will be defensive coordinator?Smile

I just don't see how this could be a good hire. Has never had a winning record and under achieved with a good Middlesboro team last year in 2a ... How can this be the answer? Like everyone one else says yeah I hope he does good but from the looks of it Whitley is in for another long couple of years!
#54
Some of you folks talk about what the record will be the next couple of years. Look at the past couple of years you haven't exactly set the world on fire should tell you something. Whitley had a good coach and now has another, they will continue to struggle if the "JIMMY's and JOE's" are not on the field that's better than the opposing team! If the off-season weightlifting program is in place (has been I am sure and will be in the future) discipline and structured program present. If those are also in place and kids lives are being changed then suck it up and support your team and the new coach. :Cheerlead:Clap::Cheerlead

Jarons Wrote:As a head coach? That is where I might have heard the name when I lived in Richmond.

He was an assistant his entire tenure there.

I am, as I said, I played for Chappell at Perry Central.

Chappell will not be running the same offense he ran at South. He said he will be running an up tempo, no huddle, much like Auburn or Oregon. He said they would be running the football and that his philosophy has changed over the years. He said he wants his team to be tough and didn't do a good job of doing that at his past head coaching jobs.

This all came from his interview with 104.3 at halftime of last night's game.

Somebody needs to go ahead and start a new thread:

"Who will be the next Coach at Whitley County"

Year one will be blamed on Jim Black.
Year two will be a new schedule.
year three will end in a coaching search.

With three years to talk about I'm sure that the thread would break the world record....
#58
I told you guys 2 months ago that they would hire Chappell and you Whitley fans said NO WAY!!! NOT GOING TO HAPPEN!!! Here your sign. Congrates to Chappell former Perry Coach.
#59
This is a good hire. he will put points on the board. Congrats Coach. Does anyone have the schedule?
