Madison Central 82 - Bryan Station 66 (11th Region Tournament)
#31
RICHMOND — As the fouls began to pile up in the first half, the Madison Central coaching staff turned to its bench to play some very important minutes.

They didn’t disappoint.

“Our guys off the bench played tremendous,” Central junior guard Dominique Hawkins said. “We needed that from them. (Bryan Station) really only plays six or seven players. We’ve got nine and we wore them down.”

Those reserves played a key role as the Indians took another step toward a trip to the state tournament.

Hawkins had a team-best 26 points, nine rebounds and eight assists and John O’Bryan added 15 points in an 82-66 win over Bryan Station (12-22) Wednesday in the quarterfinals of the 11th Region Tournament at McBrayer Arena.

The No. 2 Indians (32-1) advance to Saturday’s semifinals where they will take on Woodford County. The Yellowjackets upset Lexington Catholic Wednesday in the other quarterfinal.

“Our bench is really deep,” Central guard Daniel Parke said. “We have nine guys who can play and that really helps.”

Central’s bench produced just 10 points, six rebounds, three assists and one steal, but those statistics certainly don’t represent the role they played in the win.

In the first half, all three of the Indians’ starting guards picked up two fouls.

Parke, Hunter Stocker, George Walker and Kyle Congleton combined to play 21:38 in the first half. They committed only one turnover and helped Central take a 35-27 lead into halftime.

“I thought Daniel Parke played exceptional,” Central coach Allen Feldhaus said. “He had to handle the basketball a lot. Hunter Stocker played really well.”

Parke played more than 12 minutes in first half and did commit a turnover while scoring three points.

“It’s the regional tournament,” Parke said. “Everyone is hyped. Everyone wants to win really bad. You’ve just got to play your hardest.”

With their well-rested starters back on the court at the start of the second half, the Indians wasted little time extending their lead.

A 9-0 run highlighted by an O’Bryan three pointer, a Hawkins dunk and two baskets by Hunter Allen pushed the Central advantage to 44-29.

The Indians carried a 58-45 lead into the fourth.

“Coach just told us to hurry up and get a good lead on them, then they would just start jacking up shots, which is what they did,” Hawkins said.

Central shot 69 percent from the field in the second half and shot 59 percent for the game. Station shot just 37 percent.

Jaylen Beckham finished with 31 points, but didn’t get much help as the Defenders lost for the third time this season to the Indians.

“Beckham had a lot of points, but no one else really hurt us,” Feldhaus said.

Allen and Ken-Jah Bosley both had 12 points and Quan Taylor finished with seven points and 10 rebounds. Parke and Stocker had five points each for Central.

The Indians defeated Woodford County (22-12), 72-61, Jan. 5 in Richmond.
