I've seen a deaf team play football. They had a big bass drum on the sideline, and when they came to the line of scrimmage, he would bang out a slow steady beat. I guess some of them could hear it, but all of them could feel the percussion. If they wanted to go on "3", they all came off the line together. Pretty neat - and like all teams, they had some guys that could hit pretty hard.
My mom was blind for the latter part of her life, and one summer, I had to take her to Louisville so that she could learn some basic stuff at the School for the Blind. They have some pretty neat things like how they fold their money, and how to pour coffee, but I have no idea how they could run track or swim, considering that you need to stay in a given lane.
