Reds Hall of Fame pitcher and broadcaster Joe Nuxhall is one of 10 finalists for the National Baseball Hall of Fameâs Ford C. Frick Award for broadcasting excellence. The winner will be announced Monday, Feb. 1.
This is the fourth straight year and fifth time overall that the "Ol' Left-hander" has been a finalist.
He also was first nominated in 2003. Nuxhall earned a spot on the 2010 final ballot via fan voting online.
Like Nuxhall, Montrealâs Jacques Doucet and Torontoâs Tom Cheek have been voted finalists for the second straight year. Cheek received 5,930 votes, Doucet 5,183 and Nuxhall 1,363, the Hall of Fame said Monday.
They join seven broadcasters selected by a Hall of Fame research committee: Billy Berroa, Skip Caray, Lanny Frattare, Graham McNamee, Jon Miller, Herb Score and Dave Van Horne.
Nuxhall, a 135-game winner during 16 major league seasons spent almost entirely with the Reds, died of cancer in 2007. Miller and Van Horne are the only active broadcasters on the ballot.
The winner will be inducted in July in Cooperstown, N.Y.
Tony Kubek won last yearâs award.
Marty Brennaman, Nuxhallâs radio partner for 31 seasons, won the award in 2000. Brennaman is on the 20-member voting panel that includes the 15 living Frick Award members and 5 broadcast historians/columnists.
