Highlands Finishes at #3 in the Nation - USA Today
#10
BluegrassBuckeye Wrote:I hate to bring this up again, but does anyone really believe that Highlands is the third best team in the country? They are very good and I don't mean to belittle their accomplishment as the best team in Kentucky. That said, they wouldn't be top ten in some states.

These National rankings are just ludicrous. Highlands lofty ranking is based almost entirely on their win over Cincy St. X. At one point some polls had the Bombers ranked as high as number one in the country. They ended up losing three games and were eliminated in the second round of the Ohio playoffs.

Now, I'll sit back and wait on the nasty remarks to come my way!

:thanks:

No nasty remarks. I'm guessing though that there isn't anything anyone can say to convince you otherwise. No team in the Super 25 could say definitively that they could beat every team below them nor would they admit defeat to every team above them. I don't think that is what is intended by this ranking either. It's a recognition of the team and program. My guess is that Highlands' ranking reflects factors like the following:

Undefeated season
3 state titles in a row
1 loss for seniors over 4 years
Big win over nationally ranked team in nationally televised game
Overcame loss of experienced, starting quarterback
Several D1 prospects
High scoring offense and stingy defense
Winning program (in fact, at the top in the country in this category as well)

Again, this doesn't mean that HHS beats all but 2 teams all the time. It does mean that others outside the state recognize the program.
