Holmes’ dream season came to a disappointing end Friday night on its home field with a 25-7 Class 4A second-round playoff loss to Lexington Catholic.

But the Bulldogs’ work isn’t finished, said their coach, Stephen Lickert, who led Holmes to its first district championship in 30 years this season.
"We’re definitely disappointed with the loss, but we’re not disappointed in the season," said Lickert, who guided the Bulldogs to a six-win improvement in his third year at the helm. "Our seniors need to be proud. And our young guys have to remember what they learned from the seniors and keep it going next year."
Holmes finished 9-3 in its first season down from Class 5A after posting a 3-8 record and losing the last seven games of 2008.
When the Bulldogs broke their final post-game huddle Friday, they raised their helmets high above their heads and shouted, in unison, "District champs." Then they headed to the locker room, where the mood was somber.
Junior Tyrique Simpson took off his shoulder pads and jersey, and sat at his locker and continually thanked his senior teammates."
"I love all you guys. We’ll never forget you seniors," Simpson said.
Sophomore Charles Knox did not want to remove his uniform for the final time this season. He sat motionless at his locker for several minutes until a teammate came over and lifted Knox’s helmet off and sat it on the floor.
It was a painful loss, in more ways than one for the Bulldogs.
Senior linebacker Carlos Calimeno, who led Holmes with 10 tackles Friday, had not made it back to the locker room after being carried off the field with an injury suffered late in the fourth quarter.
Calimeno is one of 14 seniors who sparked the turnaround at Holmes. He was a leader who dragged underclassmen to the offseason weight room and rallied them round the Bulldogs’ cause, despite last season’s disastrous finish.
"Our seniors believed in our coaching staff, when there was nothing to believe about," coach Lickert said. "What they started here is something special. They have no reason to put their heads down
