Russell doesn't like losing to Ashland in all sports just like Ashland doesn't like losing to Russell in all sports. The schools don't like each other and that's what makes it a rivalry.

I would have liked to think that what makes it a rivalry is that both schools have a good likelihood of putting a good team on the field. Teams that are well coached and have a competitive heart at their core. This along with talent means that only your very best effort on the field will give your team the victory, in other words the challenge is always there. Let me ask you a question, say for the sake of argument that the government forced everybody in Russell to move to Ashland and everybody in Ashland was forced to move to Russell. Would you then not like Russell people or would you stick with not liking Ashland? Or were you just speaking figuratively?
