The truth is, mightydog, that Squid is quite a good spinner. I believe that Advanced Spinning (an accelerated course for sure) is a requirement at the motel off of Floyd Street.

It is always amusing to hear the spin when it is mentioned that they wouldn't play Rose Hill in the 2002-2003 season. Even their enlightened superintendent at the time submitted a letter to the editor of the local newspaper stating that it was a matter of "principle". Of course he never defined "principle" but obviously it was because the self-adored "tradition" did not want to run the risk of losing more games to the little upstart private school.

Mayo has been gone for over six years. He is now a millionaire playing in the NBA. And, all unbiased observers will admit that he was the best basketball talent to ever play for a 64th District team. No question. And, Bill Walker, another to wear the blue and white and most likely the second best talent to ever play for a 64th District team, is also in the NBA. The Floyd Streeters have never gotten over these facts and, in truth, never will recover.

Rose Hill's off and on run is over. No one reading this will live to see it rise up again. It will return to the status of "doormat". We can argue as to whether the wound was entirely self-inflicted or if it was "assisted" by a couple of its local opponents. It doesn't matter because the result is the same.

In the end, in modern basketball history, the 64th District will be known not for Ashland's ancient champions, but for the magic that Ovinton Mayo brought to the area with coverage from the national media (remember ESPN followed him around for days) and fans travelling literally hundreds of miles to see him play.

That, fellow posters, is the truth whether it is admitted or not.
