I think it pretty clear to anyone involved with high school athletics at least in Eastern Kentucky where good athletes (that are actually interested in playing sports) are few and far between, that you need 4 to 8 holdbacks in each class to be competitive.

Every school does it. Some do in more in one sport than in others. Clay County basketball and Corbin football come to mind but anywhere you see a tradiational winner you will find a long term hold back policy.

Some people do not like, but generally this is a sour grapes attitude from losing teams. In well over 90% of the cases, holding kids back is very beneficial to the child. They perform better socially athletically and academically. They are more mature and focussed when they hit the college campus. This is particularly true for males since they normally mature later than females.

It basically comes down to whether you had rather your child spend his eighteenth year away from home on a college campus or at home under your supervision and that of his high school.
