Before this basketball season, O.J. Mayo said he wants to be the greatest basketball player who ever lived.
That may seem like a lofty goal, but his Huntington High teammates say he has a great work ethic and a natural competitiveness that is unmatched.
Mayo was selected by the West Virginia Sports Writers Association as the 2007 recipient of Bill Evans Award for the state's boys basketball player of the year.
Before starting at Huntington this past season, Mayo played in Ohio where he was a two-time Ohio Mr. Basketball.
He had no trouble fitting in at Huntington, a team that had won the previous two Class Triple-A boys high school basketball championships and was led by Patrick Patterson, the reigning West Virginia player of the year.
Mayo led the state in scoring this season at 28.4 points per game.
He helped Huntington maintain the top ranking in West Virginia's Class Triple-A all season. Huntington plays Fairmont Senior Wednesday in the first round of the Class Triple-A state tournament.
Mayo is considered to be one of the top prep players in the country.
