Under center offense
#24
Let’s count the HUGE NEGATIVES to playing under center unless you run a pro scheme (which i’ve only ever seen the best play callers with a balanced team do).

1. QB INJURIES. How many 4A or smaller schools have more than one viable QB? Not many. If you run the spread option, your QB has space to run and get on the edge. When you run the flex bone or wishbone, the QB is primarily reading B gap players with very little space and a lot of moving parts. I want my QB to be versatile and run, but I don’t want him getting hit every play when he tries to pull it on a midline.

2. Lack of development. You don’t develop any offensive position for college in these under the center triple option teams. Unless it is a military institution, no team is going to run that offense. So now you have a QB that never learned simple passing progressions or steps, RBs that don’t know inside zone techniques (THE STAPLE), WRs with no tape catching the ball, Lineman that have no experience in pass protection. The tight ends may have a shot to move on, but that might be the most athletic position in college football right now and one of the hardest to get recruited. Even the best triple option RBs ever go on to the next level and struggle because they have never been exposed.

3. Simplicity. I’m a huge fan of the wishbone option cause i don’t think anything is as beautiful as a QB making a delayed pitch on an option, or the whole defense tackling the FB when he doesn’t have the ball. BUT!!!! You are stuck in a position where there’s under 10 things you can do. JC is a prime example of getting rid of the simplicity, they would line up in double tight bone one play, and then next play they have 3 receivers on the field and have a deep progression. However, JC had one of the best HS coaches I have ever encountered. When you are in the spread (and have any common sense) there is so many things one can do to mess with the defense. There is over a dozen formations for every personnel group (where there’s only a few when you have 3 RBs in the game) and a million motions. It is also much easier to run tempo.

Personally, I think if you have an average to above average team for your class, you should adopt what josh huepel runs at tennessee. Use tempo and the width of the field to your advantage.
