Coaches picked Sperry as the No. 1 player in the 14th the last two years in the Cats Pause, and I do the story and the poll. I often defended him when people on here criticized for him some insane things, including being too old or staying back. Of course, that is very common everywhere and has been for years.
After seeing both Eversole and Sperry play this year against Harlan County, I could see people giving the edge to Eversole. He certainly isn't as athletic as Sperry, but he was one of the most unstoppable high school players I saw the past few years. I could see the vote going either way in February, especially before Sperry had a big regional tourney and leading his team to an upset and a championship.

This is why I think there should be 2 different votes for POY and Mr. Basketball candidate. 14th region Mr. Basketball candidate has never contributed to a 14th region championship. While we are on this topic how did Winston Lee not get COY?

It is why they give MVP. Sperry was the MVP of the tournament and could have made claims even if Hazard would have won. As for POY it was a close race because both players were tops in the region. I am sure the tally was close. As for COY I can see why Holland got it but also feel Lee should have gotten the edge due to the turn around this season for Jenkins.

It is a shame we can't discuss two great players without trying to knock one down. Sperry and Eversole were the best two players in the 14th and it wasn't close. Both had great seasons and careers (POY is not a career achievement award). Both made great cases with the way they played. If it was held after tournament Sperry probably gets it. Regular season it is hard not to say Eversole deserved it because he was as dominant at his position and important for his team as Sperry was for Breathitt. Both should be celebrated without trying to knock one down.
