I also think kids transferring to other schools, then back to their original school, then somewhere else, etc has played a big part. I know this is true for other regions too, but transferring across county just didn’t happen much back in the day. The kids who started out together as freshmen stayed together until they graduated. Just my opinion, but it’s hard to build and have consistency when players are in and out like a revolving door.
