Why do we need that?

I'm not saying that I am going to disagree, just wanting to hear the reasoning. I'm guessing that you may see it as something that leads to conferences weakening, but it will take much more than a National Championship by an Independent with a strong brand, national following, and history to really shake things up.

Now, if they win a second or third championship in short order and it looks like they're getting a huge advantage from not having to share revenue, then things may change.

Even if that happens, most schools don't have the religious factor that gives Notre Dame a national fan base, so I don't know that they can sell themselves to networks as easily (assuming they're even able to break lengthy contracts).

I think it's more likely that the Big Ten throws a ridiculous amount of money at them to join. If they don't join, then I could see the other conferences doing anything they could to lessen Notre Dame's competitive edge, whether that be posturing for NCAA/NIL rules changes aimed at hurting them or not allowing their members to schedule them.

1.  All these teams conference dancing and the independent team wins it all

2.  Notre Dame doesnt have to share the $$$ with anyone, and keeps the whole pie

3.  Notre Dame getting their (unofficial) automatic bid into the playoffs every year and wining the first year, gonna make other teams want to remove their (unofficial) automatic bid.    -- Granted, they earned their bid this year --

4.  Puts the fire our of the SEC vs Big 10 is top dog conversation.

I'm least sure about #4. They'll have earned the championship if they win it, but I'm not seeing how one year changes all the recent history. Alabama absolutely smoked them the last time they played in the title game. They've had some good teams since, but most years were filled with an undisputed #1 from the SEC (whether Alabama, Georgia, or LSU), Clemson, Ohio State and Michigan.
