Sources inside of Kamala's campaign say that her internal polls never showed her ahead. They were surprised that the public polls showed that it was a close race. 

As I said at the time, Kamala ran a desperate campaign that was consistent with a candidate who believed she was way behind.

Trump ran a confident campaign, and spent time campaigning in non-battleground states. That was a reflection of what his internal polls were telling him about the race.

Always watch candidates' behavior, not what they are saying.
