All i can say is this, Belfry and JC have run the under center option for years. When the dive gets stuffed. THEY CHANGE. They have other options and utilize their other weapons. That’s why they are so good. Nobody on this app or on this planet can say that reverting back to the 90s power I offense in this game was the move to make. And i wish i could explain how infuriating it is to watch not just the same formation, but the same play, same side of the field, over and over. Catholic loaded the box with 10 players and bell still had success moving the ball somehow. Purely off of the line and miller fighting for his life. But when you get inside the 30, and everyone on the mountain knows where it’s going, who’s getting it, and what the snap count is because the old man screams his plays across the field, CHANGE IT UP. You even have the star running back coming on the sideline upset cause he’s screaming, “they know it’s the same thing!!”
If you watched the game, you seen that Catholic was limited to very few explosives for 3 and a half quarters. It was a very even matchup with catholics offense vs bells defense. But you would also notice bell county was able to move the football when they played modern. Even if it was for the 5 somewhat modern plays they ran. That’s the story all year. They go to rock, rock has a defense with a pulse, they run the spread and win. There is not one team in this state that runs a power I and wins titles period. He didn’t have the most productive back in the states history, so he didn’t know what to do. I would say that’s the sign of a bad coach. When you have a better line, a defense getting stops, and athletes that were proving to be able to match up all over the field, and you think the best idea is to run the same play 4 straight times on the 30… You are senile!
The corbin faithful called out what they seen the last 5 years, even with the success they had. Bell county fans can say Bell county would not be where it is today without Dudley and that’s the truth he established this program. But when you can be 30 yards away behind the coach and hear the play being called, and have players begging for something different, and have back to back sideline warnings to start the game because you were upset with a call (bad or not they made it), how can you look at that roster and say nobody could do any better??
Lexington catholic played very good and made nearly zero mistakes, almost no penaties, and had some unbelievable athletes… but lord Dudley handed them the region championship. Oh yeah and my favorite quote of the night from dudley after the game, “they probably got 100 players and 4 quarterbacks that can throw it a hundred yards, they have kickers that can kick it a mile” Private or public it’s 11 on 11 and he put his 11 in the worst place to win.
This is the last thing i say about bell county football until there is a change. It’s basketball season now. Congrats to Lexington Catholic I hope they have a chance to knockoff Cal and we get a new champ in 3A.
