The Electoral College forces candidates to spend time campaigning outside of big media markets. If candidates were elected on the basis of the national popular vote, then incumbents would spend more money funding projects in states on the coasts than in the flyover states.
IMO, it is stupid for people living in the interior states to support abolishing the Electoral College. I also support the EC because it was a factor in convincing small colonies to unite with large colonies to form this nation. The founders feared that large states would dominate small states and exploit them for their own benefit. That is exactly what would happen if the EC were abolished today.
