According to the testimony of Cohen,  the payment to Daniels was an illegal contribution to Trump's campaign intended to influence the election. Cohen already did prison time for this crime, as well as others. Cohen said he acted in coordination with and  at the direction of Trump, which ties the former president to the crime, as well.
