St. Edward vs. Boyle County football: West Virginia recruit leads 38-21 upset of Eagles
LAKEWOOD, Ohio — A week after St. Edward secured one of its biggest wins in the last decade against an out-of-state opponent, Boyle County came in from Kentucky with similar motivation and showed it by taking down Ohio’s three-time defending Division I state football champions.
West Virginia commit Montavin Quisenberry scored four touchdowns with 265 yards from scrimmage to lead the Rebels, who scored 17 unanswered points in the second half of a 38-21 upset Saturday at First Federal Lakewood Stadium.
“He’s the best player in Kentucky,” said St. Edward coach Tom Lombardo, whose team moved up the national rankings with last week’s 35-21 victory against Philadelphia St. Joseph’s Prep.
The Eagles (2-1), ranked No. 1 in the cleveland.com high school football Top 25, had won 20 straight games against teams from outside of Ohio. The Rebels (3-0), who are the four-time defending Class 4A state champions, replaced Rock Creek Christian (Md.) on St. Edward’s schedule after that school’s closure.
Boyle County had a rivalry game scheduled for Friday night against neighboring Danville High School, which has 11 state championship. The schools are separated by just 2.3 miles, but Boyle County coach Justin Haddix said Danville canceled that series in March.
“They didn’t want to play us,” Haddix said.
St. Edward responded in May to set up the game, which is a one-year contract.
“A lot of people, when we scheduled this game, said, ‘What the hell are you doing, Coach,’” Haddix said. “I’ve got a lot of faith in our team. They work hard, and it was good to see them come out here and play a big game.”
Boyle County never trailed, opening with a 14-play, 80-yard drive that ended with junior quarterback Baylor Murphy hitting 6-foot-6 sophomore tight end Seneca Driver on an 11-yard pass over the middle and in the end zone.
St. Edward repeatedly answered, pushing a 21-all tie into halftime.
However, the Eagles struggled to slow Quisenberry and his teammates at the skill positions. A 5-9, 160-pounder, Quisenberry is being recruited as a three-star receiver but lined up most of Saturday in the backfield. He even threw two passes for 89 yards, completing both and finding Geo Brown on a 69-yard touchdown late in the first half for a 21-14 lead.
“It’s gonna be a good ride home,” Quisenberry said. “We’ve been doubted the whole week.”
Quisenberry rushed for 141 yards and three TDs on 25 carries. He also ran back kickoffs for field-position advantages, gained 35 yards on three receptions and added an interception at safety in the fourth quarter, all but sealing the victory for the Rebels.
They seized control late in the third quarter with a two-play sequence in which the Eagles lost junior running back Brandon White to an injury at the 20-yard line. One play later, Boyle County’s Jakeem Ray picked off Thomas Csanyi in front of the end zone to prevent a potentially tying score.
Quisenberry cashed in with a 3-yard run up the middle, and Boyle County didn’t look back.
“It’s kind of a phase you have to go through,” Lombardo said, “especially after a game like last week when they were getting patted on the back and everything else. Well, the next opponent’s ready for you, and they’re really good.”
St. Edward plays host to Cincinnati Elder (3-0) next week on Saturday afternoon before an anticipated showdown in Lakewood against Massillon (2-1). The Eagles were outgained 397 yards to 222 by Boyle County, which nearly split its yardage even with 198 yards rushing, led by Quisenberry and Demauriah Brown (55 yards rushing, 64 more yards on six receptions).
While St. Edward moved up to No. 12 in this week’s MaxPreps national rankings for beating a defending Pennsylvania state champion, Boyle County had been ranked outside of the top 50.
“I even had family that said we weren’t going to win,” Quisenberry said. “There was a lot of motivation to get this win.”
