Kudos to Howard for asking Mason to be an assistant. Also shows the character Mason has, taking an assistant job when he deserved the head coaches spot. He just loves to coach and loves the game and most importantly, is in it for all of the kids. Whoever has a vacancy this off-season should call him first.

On a semi related note, what exactly happened with Derrick Newsome? I thought the parents really wanted him and was so happy to get him. I thought he would have been there for at least 10 years.

Parents wanted Derrick and then parents wanted Derrick gone after he won 3 district titles in 4 years.  Betsy Layne to a tee

But, BL also got alittle help from the Covid year, otherwise they wouldn’t have had Frazier and Howell for the 2nd title and wouldn’t have had Robinson last season in the runner-up year, without Robinson last year they’re the 4 seed. May have not won the 2nd one anyway, had Lawrence County’s second leading scorer not broke his ankle mid-season. General public seems to forget all that^^^

First year Newsome took over a 17 win team who returned everyone including the starting PG who didn’t play in the 17 win season. 

I’m glad they didn’t hire him here at SV.

Pikeville had Sammons held back and Worrix and got a transfer in Worrix who made their team what it was.  So any one can play the semantics game.

BL also got Frasure an extra year.  Robinson and Mims as well.  Yeah Semantics.

So the year Pikeville had Worrix.  Frasure and Howell were covid seniors and Robison and Mims were covid juniors.  Newsome got an extra two years basically with that core.

Point I was trying to prove is Newsome may not have one of those district titles if it wasn’t for covid. So with all the talent he did have thanks to covid it was kind of underwhelming. Problem is at Bl the parents are never happy and some worry about individual success ahead of team success. Need to pick a coach and give him 4 or 5 years to change to culture.
