Pence is not a viable candidate, IMO. Trump and the GOP put Pence in a no-win situation on 6 January and I think it is time for him to retire from politics. Had state legislatures done their jobs, Trump would be president and Pence would be awaiting his turn in the White House.
When a showdown is coming, the worst thing one can do is back down from it for reluctance sake. And that is what I believe Pence did. The time to throw the gauntlet is before your neighbor builds his fence on your property, not after. Pence may have dodged a confrontation, but he did not put any part of the controversy to rest. At this point if there is any right on the side of the GOP, it will take far more to rectify than it would have if he'd pressed the point. FAR MORE
In retrospect he bought the media's ashen faced reports of Jan 6 and acted accordingly. What I saw were the same media earlier reporting the protests put on by Antifa et-al as being mostly peaceful. And that as public and private property belonging to the people, burned in the background. The opposite is true for the events of Jan 6th, as rally goers and protesters were crawling on Capital walls, the media were casting the scene as if an invasion force from the north had overrun the entirety of DC. Those actions were not to be excused, but reports of a coup attempt were/are a stretch.
Both are examples of the media politicizing and putting their own narrative to events which only a few years ago, would have been allowed to speak for themselves. The events of 911 come to mind. And yet as Hoot has said, MR Pence' career is just as over as if he had challenged the validity of any of the electors and been wrong about it: as detailed under his clearly enumerated authority of section 15 of the Elector Vote Counting process before the joint session, and as spelled out in the US Constitution.
