Your right for the most part but a coach usually signs a 2 year contract same with football and baseball. Should a school choose to hire a new coach the second year they still have to pay that said coach because he has a contract.

contracts are year to year, would be some kind of special deal if it's any more than a year. Not done a lot. As to where he was before, coaching pay was 10,000 just like the girls job. Also they find other ways to pay more for like asst athletic director, etc..... I believe he was making like 80+ thousand or more if the truth was known.
What happened was they expected him to be coach, he ran his summer program and things started to go down hill with a certain player that threatened to leave if something was not done about him and his ways. A certain board member made sure that he would not be coaching that year, but was past the date that a coach has to be let know they will no longer be the coach. So due to the fact that it was too late for him to find another job and it would of been illegal for them not to pay him for the contract that he already signed, he was paid for what they said they would be him, as he stayed on to just teach, which was about 3 classes a day.
So it was all because they did not let him know by that certain date in April that he would no longer be coaching that they still had to pay him even if he wasn't going to coach.
It was a big mistake hiring him in the first place, but he was bringing the Johnson kid and all they were worried about at the time was getting one of the home town boys some help to get to Rupp.
