Might I suggest they also had seen the oppressive abuses of puritanical religion? the tyranny of the majority? the perils of unjust courts and lynch mob vigilanteism? Plus, the Founders allowed slavery to stand, and kept women to chattel status as well. It is only when “liberty and justice for all” means ALL that our Founder’s words and vision reach highest common denominator.
