State Champions by Class in Non-Classed sports
#15
Pulp Fiction Wrote:Let's look at the 2015/2016 school year.

Fall Sports:
Boys Soccer - Covington Catholic (5A - Private)
Girls Soccer - Sacred Heart (No football Class - Private)
Boys Golf - St. Xavier (6A - Private)
Girls Golf - Madison Central (6A)
Volleyball - Assumption (No football Class - Private)

Winter Sports:
Boys Basketball - PL Dunbar (6A)
Girls Basketball - Butler (6A)
Boys Swimming & Diving - St. Xavier (6A - Private)
Girls Swimming & Diving - Sacred Heart (No football Class - Private)
Wrestling - Union County (3A)

Summer Sports:
Baseball - St. Xavier (6A - Private)
Softball - Scott County (6A)
Boys Tennis - St. Xavier (6A - Private)
Girls Tennis - McCracken County (6A)

Private schools won Eight of the possible Fourteen Non-Classed Team State Championships. Five of the remaining Six teams are from one of the large metro areas in our Commonwealth (Union County is the only team that is not).

6A schools won Nine of the possible Fourteen Non-Classed Team State Championships. Three schools do not have a football team (Girls, Private), one 5A school (Private) and one 3A (Public).

Ladies and Gentlemen of the Jury..... The evidence before you proves beyond a Reasonable Doubt why some type of Classification system or separation of the Public & Private schools needs to be implemented in all KHSAA sports.

Micro-Brew Wrote:You can even use the 15th region as a microcosm for the state. Johnson Central over the last decade has been the dominant school in most every non-classed sport. They are the biggest school. Now I'm not complaining just stating facts, its a pretty simple formula.

Single Wing 77 Wrote:I can see the other side of it too. When the state championships were first thought up it was under the position that everyone has the same chance to win the title. Small schools like hazard, Harlan, lily high school, and corbin(who was a 1A school in the 30's when they won the sweet 16) had a chance because you only had the kids who lived in your district. Also there were a lot less big schools because bussing wasn't like it is today. Where ther used to be six or seven schools in a county, they have consolidated into one. Also, now days with transfers and social media it isn't the same. Five of the best basketball players in Louisville may decide they "want to be engineers" and end up at manual. Or a kid may think he has a better chance at another school in his region and transfer there to try to win a title (especially in the 13th and 14th regions). Not everyone has an equal shot anymore, and no amount of coaching or development can even it up. The khsaa needs to develope two classes for the non contact sports.

Let's use basketball regions for the 2015/2016 school year I've already broke down. Four of the five largest metro areas in our Commonwealth had a team win a Non-Classed team state title.

Region 1 Paducah
McCracken County

Region 2
Union County

Region 6 Louisville
Butler

Region 7 Louisville
St. Xavier
Sacred Heart
Assumption

Region 9 Covington
Covington Catholic

Region 11 Lexington/Richmond/Georgetown
Madison Central
Scott County
PL Dunbar

More evidence presented to the Jury. This is not me complaining about any school or region not winning a state titles on a regular basis. As Single Wing 77 said, in 1917, the KHSAA had the perfect idea for that time that all member schools had an equal shot at winning a state championship. "One state, One champion." In 1959, the KHSAA began awarding Three State Championships in Football. In 1975, the 4 Class system was introduced. In 2007, we got the 6 Class system.
Now, I realize the BOC can make the decision to experiment or implement with some type of Class system. It's worth at least experimenting with some type of Class system for all sports or a Public/Private split. If I'm wrong and it's a disaster, then I'm wrong and I'll admit it.
