The KHSAA Mission Statement
The Kentucky High School Athletic Association was organized in 1917 and is the agency designated by the Kentucky Department of Education to manage high school athletics in the Commonwealth. The Association is a voluntary nonprofit 501©3 organization made up of 280 member schools both public and private. The KHSAA sanctions 40 state championships in 12 sports and 4 sport activities, licenses and trains over 4,000 officials, provides catastrophic insurance for its more than 70,000 member school student-athletes, as well as overseeing coaching education and sports safety programs.
Alright KHSAA, the evidence doesn't lie. Your mission statement says "To manage high school athletics in the Commonwealth."
There is NO WAY any reasonable person can look at the results above and think these sports are being properly managed. Some type of Class system or Public/Private Post-Season split needs to occur.
Volleyball has been a KHSAA sport since 1979.... That's 38 seasons and NO public school has EVER won the state championship.
Boys Swimming has been won by the same team (St. Xavier - 6A) for 28 straight seasons.
Girls Swimming has been won by a 6A school or a Private school since 2007.
Boys Soccer has been won by a 6A school or a Private school since 2007.
Boys & Girls Tennis have been won by a 6A school or a Private school since 2007.
Something can be done by the KHSAA. I don't have the best solution, but any type of Public/Private split or Class system has to be better than what we have now.
Have two classes, Small Schools (1A, 2A, 3A) split from the Large Schools (4A, 5A, 6A).
If not a Class system, split the Public and Private schools for Post-Season play.
Telling schools to "up their game" or develop more athletes in their feeder systems, hire better coaches or schedule tougher competition is not an answer. For some teams, winning a Regional tournament and going to the state meet in that sport can set a town on fire with support for their school. Winning a state championship (classed or not, Public/Private split or not) can get more kids involved at all levels in that area. If the KHSAA really wants high school sports as well as middle, elementary and rec. leagues to grow in our Commonwealth, they really need to Class or have a Public/Private split.
