Don't know the layout in the east, but in the far west you will never get a closer game in the early rounds of playoffs if you are in district 1. Mayfields 1st 3 playoff games last year was Hancock county, butler county, and Owensboro Catholic. If you pair mayfield with any other district besides district 2 the closest opponent would be in Louisville area, so when mayfield doesn't pair up with district 2 they will be playing teams that are farther like green county, glasgow, desales, Cal in the 1st 3 rounds there will never be a year when it gives a far west team closer games in the 1st 3 rounds, the only round it could happen would be semis if they played o cath instead of a Louisville team, but that would mean they had to travel further for 3 rounds just to get a closer opponent for 1 round. Not a good trade off at all out west as far as travel. If you get a 1 seed in your district not as big a deal, but any team like say Murray that has been The number 2 team in the district lately will be losing money on travel. The positive is not having to see the same teams every year in the early rounds, and new places to visit.

It's not a perfect distance scenario, and from everything I looked at with the districts, it seems that the far west teams (pretty much always District 1) have an unavoidable drive ahead of them.

But, in the case of Mayfield, the drive from some of the district 3 and 4 schools is pretty similar.


I think another issue with all of it, is that you might give some teams a better fighting chance to win a playoff game.

Like with Mayfield. Usually, year in and year out, they're going to beat the cross district #2. That's fine for them. But, it gets a little old for the perennial 2 spot in 2nd. But, suddenly, they don't have to run into the buzz saw. If I'm in 2A district 2, and I just found out I might not have to play Mayfield in the 2nd round and might get to substitute Glasgow, Monroe, Green, Metcalfe for them? I'm in 3A district 5? And I don't have to play Belfry in round 2? I'm beyond excited if I'm one of those teams. Like, go home and celebrate like it's Christmas excited.

As much as we all want to talk about anyone can win on any given Friday night, we all know that Mayfield is Mayfield. Belfry is Belfry. Bowling Green in Bowling Green. They are who they are for a reason. Teams aren't them, for a reason. I think it does add a more competitive dynamic to certain districts. And I think that's great.
